No water box??

Can someone give me the info on water boxes? I just bought several skis, one of which is an X2 with an engine. This ski has a head, pipe, carb, K&N flame arresters, possibly a trim set up, looks like a lot of the good stuff. I haven't gotten it apart yet to see about the crank, flywheel, etc. It has numbers on it, some glass damage, and appears that maybe it was raced.

What has me, is that I wanted to pull this pipe (or rebuild this engine for my ski) but there is no water box. Why? I don't see why there'd be preformance parts on this ski and no water box. The pipe goes to a U-shaped pipe the routes the exhaust out the back of the X2.

The best I can figure is the waterbox is mostly a silencer and they ran it w/o one for more power (like race cars). I know that would make it a lot louder, but with the exhaust in the water, how much would it matter?

Anyway, I skimmed search and asked the question in my build thread and haven't found an answer. Any comments on the topic??

My ski didnt have a water box when I bought it. Same situation as you, it has a B-pipe and the guy who owned if previously chucked the water box just because he thought it sounded good without it. I thought it was extremely loud and would most likely piss people off so I bought one and stuffed it in there.

It probably runs worse without a waterbox ,not better,it does need to have some restriction in there to run properly.I have a stock waterbox for an x2 that I will not be using if you need one.

Since the exhaust goes out the back they may have put a through hull silencer in the ski. Just my guess.

My friend's 650 SX with a bad bones and limited water is a lot louder than my X2 with a stock box and water setup.

Whether or not it is too loud depends really. A good friend of mine has a speedboat with a 383 stroker that no joke is about as loud as a top fuel drag car. The idle on that thing sounds killer, but it is obnoxiously loud, but I have never seen anyone on our canal, or at the ramp complain when I was with them. It is a huge lake, so I doubt when he's cruising around it can really be heard on shore. Now with all the jetski haters out there (mostly stuck up old people) I would think it would be more likely to complain, but who knows, probably depends how far from shore you ride. I doubt not running a waterbox will make it as loud as a 383 with no restrictions in the exhaust which dumps above the water.

The waterbox does 2 things, tones the exhaust down and prevents water from backing up into the exhaust/engine when you shut down in the water with the exhaust under water.

If you don't put a box in, at least increase the amount of water going into the exhaust to tone it down some.

I run do not run a waterbox...it helps with bottom end snap and gets ALOT of weight out of the nose of the ski for dare I say...backflips.:sneaky:

As for noise it is louder no doubt....but it IS NOT as loud as people with after market waterboxes and side exhaust.

You may find that a previous owner put a long silencer below the footwell. I have seen this done on a few x-2s that were converted to rear exhaust.

I wont be doing back flips.

I figured it can't bee too loud if I move the exhaust under the water. Maybe I can just leave the box in on my 650 and try this out by rerouting the pipe to the side. I could see what will happen ahead of time. It'd surely be loud because I am running a side exhaust, but I doubt it'll bother me. My quad has an after market pipe and the sound is deafening.

if this were the case, I could put this in the hull of my 650 and get the water box out of the front. An option for getting the box out of the nose.

I have a REV 800 (GP800) ski with no water box. At idle in the water no problem. Once you open the throttle and get going, then every one knows your number. Any one close will look your way to see what is making all that noise. I have a 15 yr old son who rides it all the time. I sit on shore and talk when he is out riding. I can hear him a very long ways away. If I don't hear it, I then get up and start looking for him. I am sure people other than me don't like the extra noise, so I try to move away from them when riding. We all have to be respectful of each other. I would say go try it out first and see what you think. If you think it will draw to much attention to yourself then go get a water box. I know what the water cop boat looks like so when we see it coming we come in and rest and wait for him to move along. I know he would have something to say about the noise.

I run a resonator instead of a waterbox on my SN. It came with it. I can't stand it. It''s loud as heck.

It's fine when we head to the ocean. Although at the river every damn water cop will turn and look your way.

I finally picked up a water box on ebay.

no different that stupid Harleys with ridiculous exhaust can do what they want drunk as s*** and never get pulled over. Do a wheelie 55mph around a curve and I'm the one being dangerous and out of control.
