I just had what sounds like the same thing happen to me 2 days ago... I was out riding ran fine than just died, the battery is fine you can hear it turning over it just wont fire... Checked for spark and there was nothing!

This was on an 04 sx-r

Check 2-pin harness plug in top of e-box, for proper contact(green and brown wires I think)

I have blowsion cdi and when batery is near dead but stil turning starter pretty fast, then I have no spark, even if I add an external source.
Then I must unplug battery for about 5seconds, add an external source and restart it again. Then I have no problems with that along the day

With this cdi my batery is dead after 1 week if I leave jet alone :). I mounted switch for battery disconect when the weather in bad.

I just got a diagnostics done at the shop they said it was my cdi that caused the problem so if your buddys ski is still messed up I would check that out. It sounds quite a bit like what mine was doing so i wouldnt be surprised if that was it.

I have a stock cdi around if anybody needs it. Has about 20 hours on it. I swapped it out for the Blowsion CDI-R and then swapped that out with an Advent T3, didn't have a problem with any of them.

when the stator goes bad I would spend a little more and just get the TBM total loss flywheel, reliable as hell and never have issues with battery, I can run all weekend with a single full charge, I forget that I have total loss somethimes. I'll never have a stator go out ...maybe something else

That happened to me the other day on my 06 and all it was was the free standing white connector came loose. Plugged it back together and good to go.
