No spark on my 650.. either plug

So I replaced the plugs and went out for a little ride. The ski died after about 30 minutes and I thought it was just out of gas. Get the ski back to my house (where it sits for a week or so). I take it out of the garage and try to fire it up before heading to the lake. The engine will turn over, but I can't get a spark out of either plug.

Any suggestions?

Check the simple things first, like loose wires or a bad kill switch. Then check the coil and stator. If everything checks out then it would be your cdi box. You will need an ohm meter and a shop manual. It could be bad plugs also but the chances are slim because you just replaced them.

If you are talking about a Yamaha 650, disconnect the White / black plug coming from the Ebox that goes to the handle pole. This is the stop / lanyard switch which might be partially on due to corrosion and be killing the CDI from making spark. Be sure and turn down the idle so the engine will stop if it ends up cranking. Also old spark plug wires tend to break due to the low strand count of the stock wires. With the ski off check the resistance between the plug caps. You should have about 4700 ohms if they are the stock caps. If you get no reading then you might be able to trim the bad wire / wires back enough to get it going.

Start at the source and check all components thoroughly. Don't forget the little things like corrosion and connections. Be methodical in your approach. If you can find someone with a peak voltage meter, you will likely have found two very helpful things. Peak voltage is the quickest, most accurate means to find 95% of all ignition part failures. If you know someone that actually has one then he probably knows how to use it and what readings to look for. Shoot me a pm if you need the peak voltage minimum specs.
