Other nikasil plating the wear ring?

first off, can the wear ring be replaced in the housing if the ring has bubbled? secondly, could it be nikasil plated? i know nothing about the process of plating a cylinder but i would imagine it could be possible and then you would be less likely to get a bubble in the housing.

It can be done but not economically. The aftermarket plastic ones are working fine if you cant find a good OEM.

What is not economical? The plating and then bore to size or replacing the ring? Can u put the plastic rings in an OEM housing??

It isnt economical to replace the SS liner in the oem housing or to bore it out to accept the plastic liners.

Nikasil wouldnt be feasible unless you had an aluminum housing that was sized correctly before plating, but cool idea!

More wear ring info in JM thread here:

Can I heat the housing up and slide the ring out like a sleeve? I want to try something if its essentially trash. What is the thickness of nikasil once it's plated? What's the thickness of the SS ring? I found a shop locally that does plating and cyl repair, they didn't pickup tho. If I can get it done for less than 120 that sounds good to me and the nikasil is harder than SS right?

Scott at exactal tool replaced my kawi stainless wear ring with a new one. It was about $200 and that covered a rebuild, the new liner and return shipping. It's been about 4 years and it's still like new. It was a fair deal imo. I have since lost his info, but someone on the site referred me to him.

can buy a new one for less than 200 tho, im gonna keep trying to get a hold of this shop and ask some questions

SJ wear ring has lugs cast into the aluminum housing and recesses in the stainless ring that lock the ring in place. So, the ring can't be slid out of the housing and a new one slid in.

So the shop can plate it up to .12 but he doesn't think he could plate the housing. The amount of corrosion under the ring was ridiculous. Seeing how much there was makes me want to go with the replaceable rings from now on when I have to replace one next. I will get a pic up.

The question is why would anyone bother plating it?
Low friction isn't a concern.
Swelling is a concern only in saltwater over at least a few years.

Even when it does become an issue, you can buy a new OEM wear ring for a reasonable price or buy a Delrin wear ring from SBT for the same price and you can keep replacing just the liner in that. I have replaced the Delrin liners on Seadoo pumps a few times now and it's pretty easy and cheap.

I use the replaceable kind and its simple and easy. I do it every year or two. Nothing to it.

But you have to get a different wear ring housing correct? I am just curious, because this is the route I will go when I need to replace mine.
