Next Step, in this install?

Shifty

- SuperJet Thursday -
I have nearly finished my foothold install, but have a few questions.

I cut out the holes and dug the foam out with a chisel, then smoothed the foam with a wire wheel. I then roughed up all areas with an 80 grit flap disc and drilled a one inch hole on the rail caps for the foam pour.

I temporarily mounted the holds with 3 screws and drilled 5/16 holes every inch or so around the perimeter of each one, pulled the temporary screws out, wiped everything down with acetone, and mixed and up some epoxy & Cabosil.

I mounted each hold with pop rivets, which sucked them up good.

My question now is, do I simply lay a 4" strip of e-glass around the perimeter of the hold o(verlap the ski and foothold about 2" inches on each side)? After that I am going to lay a layer of biaxial across the tray and into the holds.

Next question, when I pour the foam, can it expand too much and push the sides of my ski out?

Thanks, its my first insall ...

Old, but still ridin'!!!
Yes and probably not.

Yes add a strip around the hold overlaping on both parts. Make sure to rough up both areas well, I prefer 45 or 60 grit and I sand down enough to get rid of the gelcoat on the ski side so the resin adheres to bare material. You may also want to feather the edges of the holds towards the hull so there isn't a sharp "step" between the two surfaces.

The foam can expand enough to blow a side out, but since you're just filling in around the holds, you won't be putting in enough foam for that to happen. Make sure you get a good solid foam base on the bottom of the holds, any voids there and you will be prone to cracking your holds.

Once you have it all glassed in, simply drill a few holes in the side and in the foot holds themselves and use some 3M expanding foam in the can. Just stick the nozzle through the holes and spray. That way the foam will expand inside and still have a place to expand out of so it doesn't blow out the sides. A little foam goes a loooooong way. When it dries, just clean up the excess foam and your ready for turf.
