with a wet pipe, water is actually injected into the expansion chamber, this helps to control the sonic wave for the tuning of the pipe, Factory Pipe designed a system where you can actually tune it your self, whereas Coffmans, R&D and Westcoast it was set from the factory.

dry pipes use a fully waterjacketed expanshion chamber that solely relies on the design of the pipe to control the tuning.

both pipes inject water into the stinger sections to keep the excaping gases cool enough to not burn out the hoses.

why would you want water sent into an exhaust pipe? I guess I am confused by this because I am really only familiar with aftermarket exhaust for motorcycles, quads, etc.

Just like Kahuna said, It simulates the lengthening or shortening of the chamber depending on where and how much water is injected. Gives you the option of tuning for top, mid or low end power.
Read Factory pipe's site.

You can make a dry one wet if you rub on it and tell it how pretty you think it is. Wet ones perform better.
