I consider myself a reasonable mechanic but new to Jetski's. I inherited a 1998 Yamaha Superjet 701, 62T cases, 61X cylinders and 64U head. I am the second owner, I believe the engine has never been apart. The ski sat in my yard unused since 2006, but used to run with no known issues. I am now ripping into it and the engine internals are so rusted out I am replacing it with a SBT block.
I wanted to be sure I knew how to check/set the timing before I sent the old engine back. In reading this forum and other sources I hear "align the arrow with the notch, or you could advance it a few degrees by rotating the stator counter clockwise a few degrees which evidently corresponds to a few mm".
If you see the picture here it looks to me the stock setting was ~4.5mm retarded from what I'm told. Notice also the 2 little dots on each side of the notch. Though I already took out the screws holding the stator they were tight and you can see in the pic they are aligned to the screw holes, no marks of another position or sliding.
1) Do you agree the timing appears retarded?
2) When I get the new block should I align the notch and the arrow or repeat the way it is on this engine?
3) What are the little dots on each side of the notch indicate?
3) Am I thinking of this wrong?
fyi - I made the marks at 2 O'Clock before I took it apart
Thanks in advance, I bow to your superior knowledge
