newbie, a couple questions.

Looking at buying a 2000 superjet, its got a 95 motor in it, which was recently bored from 701 to 717. If done correctly, should I be worried about crank handling additional power and/or cylinder wall strength from being bored out? Its got a new 44mm carb, was that a stock size? Any things I should take into consideration, any advice would be appreciated. thx

No need to worry or have any concerns. OEM cranks can handle a lot more power than what a 701 can put out. No need to worry about the cylinder wall thickness either. Where it's at now it it perfectly fine.

44 Mikuni's were what all the Yamaha 650-701 61X motors came with from the factory.

The bore you have is a repair. It's not going to make the ski unreliable unless something else was done it or it was done incorrectly.

I don't recall if the 44mm is stock that year but it's what you want so don't worry about what was stock.

Lots of information available using search. I'd recommend however that you go and ride it before you start trying to change things. If it runs good, then it's perfectly fine for getting out and meeting people and test riding their skis. You'll then have a better idea of what you want to do.

thanks for both replies, I'm going to go test drive it, it's also got a B-pipe exhaust, which seems to be a preferred mod, but I believe it has a stock impeller and from what I read, that's not a very good impeller.

So, when test driving the ski, are there any typical things you guys look for, that signals potential problems?

As for before buying it, lots of threads on that if you use search.

Compression should be even within a few PSI. Stock is 150, aftermarket or decked heads should be at or above 150. I wouldn't buy anything with compression below 140 or uneven by more than 5-10 PSI.

The throttle should be responsive. I don't say smooth because it can be pipe-y based on the way it's tuned, but it should never just go bllaaaahh and fall on it's face.

Other than that, mostly just condition. Look for rust or corrosion. Cables that the sheething is broken. Missing or broken bolts. etc.

Your goal with your first ski is to have something that runs perfect much more so than something that is super powerful with a lot of upgrades. You can always sell a good running ski and buy a different one later or upgrade it. A ski that runs poorly with worn out parts wont get you the ride time you need to meet people and test ride other machines.

The stock prop is a turd. You can tell if it is stock because it is aluminum and the blades are about 1/4" thick. That would be the first thing I replace, but it'll suffice so enjoy before you replace.

Oh, and make sure the HIN on the title matches the HIN on the hull and that the year on the title is from 96-07 (or 08+) if it is a round nose. A year before 96 is a square nose and you shouldn't pay premium prices for bad titles.
