New Guy Here, new project - 750 Big Pin in a 550 hull

Hi everyone, I’m Kevin, or Pullstart. I frequent more Wheel Horse tractor forums than jet skis, but I dabble in a lot of mechanical stuff.

My buddy has these two skis, a JS440 hull with a hopped up ported and polished JS550 engine that has been sitting for 10 years and we recently got back on the water, and a JS550/750 big pin stock engine. This ski we picked up not running and we have not seen it perform. We’re told it rips.

It has a single carb. I recently took it apart, Berryman carb dipped the carb components and reassembled it. I then painted it with marine paint. the fuel pump is pressurizing the tank, but it will not get fuel to the carb.

I can prime it 10 times, get it to run kind of, run around the lake a bit and when it dies, the primer line is empty and it cannot start again without 10 pumps. It seems like the fuel is being pulled from the primer tube.

I’ve also held my hand mostly over the carb inlet to choke it and got it to run, but I think it’s still through the primer tube. If it is running and I pinch that tube it’ll die.

Not knowing the build details of this ski, it’s hard to troubleshoot for me. Any thoughts or ideas?

I took some videos of the ski when I first brought it home, and pirated some pictures from the videos to show what we’re working with.

Buy a Mikuni carb kit and replace and/or clean the parts individually. I have never needed anything stronger than carb spray. If I did then the whole engine was rusted as well.
