Not sure where this post belongs, so feel free to move it:biggrin:

Heres the deal:

I have never painted anything before with a spray gun.
I want to paint my ski, helmet, truck bumper, valance, and drop ceiling tracking.

I need to buy a setup that will work to paint my ski first and foremost.
It would be nice if it will work for all the other jobs that need paint.

I think I want a Gravity feed HVLP gun???
Here are the kits and guns I'm interested in, what do you think or does any one have suggestions.

That's the gun I picked up, and so did a buddy of mine. Good for the once in a while painter like me. That gun will do ya just fine... Definitely get a water separator.

Ok I think I have narrowed it down...

In order of choice are:

DeVilbiss - DEVGFG670 (1.2.-1.3-1.4 tips)
DEVILBISS FINISHLINE III MASTER PAINTER KIT (1.3-1.5-1.8-2.2 tips)

Which would you pick...

A gravity fed or suction fed guns both work well. A 20 gallon compressor works fine.
I'd use regualar auto paint (base/clear or single stage) for all of it so you can use the same size nozzels on the gun.

I would just pick up the one Mouthfulloflake was refering too... for the money it's a decnt gun. I mean, unless you're planning to start doing alot of jobs and want a better gun.

I am planning on painting more thatn my ski...

Helmet, ski, Parts on my truck, track for a drop cieling, possibly a dump bed...

I'd like to buy a gun with variable tips so I can be more precies I think I could spend like 200 - 300 TOTAL.

It will pay its self off quikly with the other jobs if I dont suck at painting.

Thanks-NICK

--- 3M 7192 Maintenance Free Organic Vapor Half-Facepiece Respirator 14.45
--- DEV-HAR602 120CFM AIR LINE CONTROL UNIT $74.74
--- FLG653KIT-Generic Regulator (D) Review Stock Finishline III Super Kit 1.3,. 1.5, 1.8, 2.2 Tip set w/ Case $198.95

(I chose to save 10 buck with generic regulator beacuse the controll unit has it, good idea or bad idea)

UPS Ground [15701] Shipping: $10.23
Grand Total: $298.37

So it looks like 300 bucks can paint everything at a good grade.

Well you spend your $300 but you forgot about all the supplies you're gonna need! sandpaper, scuffpads, tape, masking paper, primer, paint, buffing compound, etc. That's another $100 at least!

I already got that stuff. Except paint my quote for everything was like 140-180 depending on color I pick.

Just make sure, whatever you do, that you clean your gone and make it SPOTLESS when putting it away. first spray some thinner through it, then unplug it and run mroe through it so it just trickles, clean the cup inside and out and everything else. Makes an old gun look brand new forever, and itll always be in working condition

The Finishline III is a nice gun for the money. One thing you want to be sure of, more than the size of the compressor you use, is the flow rate. The FL3 I believe requires about 10-12 CFM at 40ish PSI. Check those numbers, not the tank size. You'd be surprised how many large tank compressors have low CFM ratings.

most compressors wont make 10-12 CFM at 50 PSI.

but the good thing is most of those HVLP guns dont use that much.

I have sprayed unthinned latex thru my cheapy gun with a 4hp 20 gal comrpessor ( and its worn out.) it sprays just fine, it just doesnt cycle off much.

you WILL need the dryer filter unit, and I also suggest the disposable water filters also that screw rright onto the bottom of the gun. ( use that in addition to the inline filter) make sure the inline filter is 20 feet or so of hose away from the compressor, the hot air sometimes wont cool and condense soon enough to get filtered out if the filter is right at the compressor.

to me personally, I like cheap tools, that way if I drop it, or break it, or leave some paint in it, IM not so beat up about it.

Ive had this gun for 6 years plus, it still worlk great, I didn have to buy another paint cup for it last year, since I broke the lid to the orignal none.

ordered a generic off of ebay for $12 or so.

im sure you will be happy with whichever un you choose, I just personally prefer cheap stuff!

( it saves more gas and beer money)

the Finishline III is a good gun, I have it.............

Ya i have one too and use it all the time and my business is fiberglass repair and refinishing, so I paint ski's, RV body repair, boats, etc. I also do vinyl, leather, and velour repair too.
If you have a HVLP gun you can paint a ski with a 20-30 gal. tanked compressor with no probs.
Mine came with 2 tips.
