need help serial port stopped working, what to do ??

My serial port on my computer suddenly stopped working and I cant sent data to my cnc machines, do I have to get a new motherboard ??
I checked that it was still enabled any Ideas on how to check fix repair this ??

any advise must be simple, as I am only mechanically minded I am computer challenged

If it did fry out, or even if it didn't and is just messed up, you could get a USB to Serial converter......hold on.....I'll find one.

Newegg has several but don't skimp......I have gotten burned on crappy specialty cables.

Vantec has never let me down.

Serials rarely die though but with that kind of use I could see it happening I guess.

Try using another machine if you can find one with a serial port and the software you need....

Ive never had an issue in 20 years it worked yesterday , I tripped the circut breaker in the garage and now it wont work, Ive narrowed it to the computer or the null modem adapter

I looked at the usb ports but from what I understand they wont or dont work in my application

its a 5 year old computer , found them the same one (D865gbf) on fle-bay for around 20 bones, just thought if its failing adding to it might be bad, is it a simple swap ?

If everything else seems fine and you are pretty sure its not a software issue then I would just go with the add on card IMO. Intel boards are pretty bullet proof.

Assuming it is not the Null modem adapter but I have no idea what that is.

if you get it to work let me know. i've been having to use an ancient tower to program a fpga for class and would love to use a usb to serial, but the one i bought from new egg didn't work and no one in my class has been able to even get the pci ones to work.

Nope
got new null modem and cable didnt fix it

spend 2 hours trying to get a PCI one to work and the driver wont install without some error so that was money and time down the drain tried downloading the newest driver same issue

And Im sure when I lug this thing to the repair guy he'll:1zhelp: look at the devise manager and tell me " it says its working."

to make matters worse our newest computer doesnt even have a serial or printer port

Try and find a clean older used XP machine on craigslist. I sell quite a few that way. Find one local on CL for 100.00 bones and go grab it.

I don't get the PCI cards not working at all.
