Hey guys i am in need of some guidence while preping my sn project for paint. This is my first ski build up and have no idea what im doing paint wise. So basicly step by step what do i do? My ski currently has black paint over the gelcoat (looks like spray paint but is on there well and dosnt chip off). So where do i start just take some 60 grit and start sanding or 120? or 220? do i sand by hand? or a random orbital sander? Do i use paint stripper first? Also i am only painting the top half because the bottom is still really white with minimal scratches! Any tips help or imput is greatly appreaciated!!!

Thanks,
Nate

220 is good enough for paint with random orbital sander, or by hand, and can use green scotch bright pads in hard to reach areas and on edges. I use alcahol to wipe down the the ski, then go over it with a cheese cloth to get all of the particales off, dirt etc, Info blowsion gave me when i painted my ski, I used single stage paint and has held up nicely

For top coating around 320-400 grit and you wont get any scratches showing through the paint. You could get away with 220 or maybe less with a high build primer.

If you don't know what it was painted with before you have to be careful. Alot of urethane paints don't like enamel spray paints and will react when sprayed over. Test it with some lacquer thinner and see if it can be wiped or smeared if it does you have to get that paint off there before you do anything. Either with stripper or sand paper and a sander. If you want pm me I'll give you my number I can give you some more tips. I used to paint show cars for a living.

If u want to do it rite. Get all the paint off sand or wipe off old paint sand down to gel coat dont go threw gel or ul see alot of pin holes. fix any imperfections. Any thing below 500 grit you will see when using a base clear. I usually sand whole ski with 320 and primer whole and and the primer that has Guide coat on so I can see any thing... 500 grit. Seal it base it clear it done no wet sanding involved.

I laughed my a$$ of when I pulled a sticker off my bob and the clear coat came with it.

People say paint works hard its not.. Hard part is prepping it.. If you see it before you put paint on ul see it after...

I usually just go to the local painters supply. I think you want an epoxy primer sealer, PPG Shopline has worked good for me in the past.
