My Ski Nautique and Build Up

After 4 skis being built (about 5 years) and the wife bitching about it,l started back on my 89 ski nautique build.

Long story, but l’ve just neglected this boat.So last night after work a good friend and l (he has an auto upholstery shop) started gluing down the carpet. It is more like he is teaching me the how-to,because l never have done carpet before.l have a number of years doing auto upholstery, but not this.We got the floor down and sides, except for trimming the edge where the sides meet the deck.Tonight we will work on the deck behind the engine and a number of other small pieces (drivers foot pad, etc).

The engine has been rebuilt and the hull has been wet sanded and buffed.Hornedogg (thanks Jon!) repaired the drivers seat platform a couple years ago cause it had some cracks in it.Got a ton of new parts to replace old, faded and broken parts.Guaranteed l have went over budget on this build, but if your are gonna do it,do it right.

As a side note,l’m buying a glue pot.Uses air an pressured tank that you spray as needed the glue out (first pic shows what it does).l am added this to my tools for turf jobs.lt uses Weldwood glue (just spray able) to distribute the area you want to glue down.Five minutes dwell time! And you can spray as you go.Sticks as well as the brush weldwood. Can’t wait to try it out.6549A1B3-D3A3-4D74-BEBC-09153C2724EB.jpeg55A1FEE3-F9AD-432F-8C95-31BEDDA08A8B.jpeg7A342804-4BFB-43FA-9258-9E2AF45CC715.jpeg

Nothing better than bringing these old school ski boats back to life. I like them 100 times more than the $100k+ boats out there now.

I have a 04’ ProStar 209 and I need to get the upholstery addressed very soon.

Love the old AWSA approved boats! Big surf boats are a lot like sit downs skis.

Agreed. Seeing these people wakesurf looks like it takes zero skill. And I like to wakeboard and wakesurf. Try learning to slalom at 50 years old like I did a few days ago. Never thought I would like it but but I could not be more wrong.

That a 351?
Yes sir
The engine had around 460 hours on it when l bought lt.ln part of the process l took to be tuned up.Called the tech a couple times with no answer about a week after he had it.So l drove to his shop to find it outside with the engine cover up and the spark arrestor off.lt had rained the previous day...Needless to say it had water in it.At that point l had the engine pulled and rebuilt.

No time for pics last night, but we took all the wood panels (inside the seating area) stripped them and re-glued the new carpet on them.Bringing it home tonight and installing the panels back on the boat.Going to spend some time cleaning the engine and touching up the paint l previously done (l’m a picky little bitch, ain’t l) on it.My next step is finishing polishing the black dash gel coat and applying wax.It was buffed, but still needs more finish work.l’m picking up some 35% window tint for the windshield today cause it cuts down on glare and it just looks fuggin cool. Then l install those 3 pieces back on the hull.I have a new gasket for it.

Then l’m going riding on the lake.Hopefully @brraaapperdoodle will get his butt up here and ride tomorrow!!

Looks like C & S Marine are the ones to go too. They bought the rights for Correct Craft frome Christene’s a few years ago and do a great job Mike.I paid a lot for my upholstery and carpet, but Christene’s did most of the original work for CC.They will send you the skins and then you can install.Give them a shout when you get ready.

I went wakeboarding behind a natique. It was nuts. The guy had steel plates in the nose and the entire back deck was a giant custom water balast. The wake was waist high. I didn't even bother hitting it. Too much for my skill level.

Is that a 2001 Hull?(not the year model) Those pcm 351w’s are great motors. Had one in a ski centurion. It never let me down in the 12 years I owned it.

Got back this week to working on the boat.My wife has been gone to her sisters for a good part of the summer, which lets me spend more time now.
So the carpet has been done and now ready to install all the boards that cover the gas tank and also in the bow that covers the wiring in front of the driver.
l thought l was finished with polishing the dash, but found that underneath the steering is still faded.l need to take the wheel and it’s dash cover off to have enough room. Then l can install the new dash and gauge cover and be done with it.Also replace the decals too.
@Myk ,yes it is a 2001 style hull.Correct Craft only used small decals in 89 to identify the model.l don’t know if the next year it was more prominent?

*more pics coming..

THat 2001 hull is still desirable to this day. It puts out the best wakeboard wake you can get for the money. Not to mention ‘89 might’ve been the last year for it. Super cool build man!!!

I grew up and still live in a beach area. Most of the boats are fishing n cruising style boats. When I moved to Orlando for MMI I worked at a ski rental/water ski school. We had 2 Toyota boats. They were great. Driving a real ski boat is like driving an Indy car. They have awesome response. Good luck with the build. Your engine guy sounds like the guy who did the work on my SJ when I sold it, lol. Hope it turns out ok. That’s very irresponsible for the shop to leave it like that.

On a roll today.Got the decking board that the thru hull port for the prop shaft hole assembled and installed.l ordered the ring and cover from Christene’s thinking it would be the same size as the original (well, screw me),negative..lt was a half an inch smaller all the way around. So l had to cut a circle out that fit into the existing hole in the board and then cut another hole out of the circle and massage it into fitting. Then glue it into the board, then install the ring and cover. There went 3 hours, boom.
l got started on the drivers seat assembly and fastened it down to to a fiberglass platform that was broke and repaired.Have to thank @hornedogg79 for the repair and actually making it better then it was originally.Thats a pic of the drivers seat which will bolt down later to the platform. But it is in the way for some other things to get done (think 5 steps ahead....always).l needed to get the shift lever off and send it to be re-chromed.lt is pitted.l also got a new steering wheel to install, but before l do that,l have remove the whole (steering) assembly off and buff underneath and replace the decals.Trying to get as close to original as l can.
Once l get all that done,l have a new panel that the key and some electrical switches are on.The old panel is broke.

So it’s coming along and plan on spending tomorrow morning working on it more, but need some ski time too.C124D409-EDB1-4171-9CDB-CD02DF0DB59C.jpeg6F9CEDBB-3B73-4563-A9BD-D9899950AA28.jpeg91529D02-96D8-4DFF-B287-D94EC575238D.jpeg8920755C-82EB-496E-B202-63CFD54950C8.jpeg466C60EC-0DB4-4CEB-B3A2-7A706133158F.jpeg
