Super Jet My driveshaft keeps growing in length...

When I first purchased my setback Mag pump with the setback shaft, it came preassembled from Impros and the assembled pump was 1/4" longer than the OEM pump. I had to loosen my motor mounts and shift the engine forward, as well as adjust my midshaft so the shaft didn't bottom out in it.

The housing cracked recently so I sent it back to have Skat press it into a new housing and upon return and reassembly, the assembly is now over 3/8" longer than OEM and further adjustment was required yet again.

I don't understand how this is possible. What did I do wrong when assembling the pump?

Has anyone else had any experience with something like this?

This Skat pump has been one issue after another right from the get go. Dave at Impros has been great to deal with and my only saving grace. Had I been dealing with Skat directly I am quite sure I would have blown my top already.

Skat could use a bit of QC, that's for sure.
I ordered an impeller for my 140 mag pump from them. It could not be used without an additional spacer washer, or it bottomed out on the hub.
Skat impellers are well known for not having the pitch they advertise.

I thought that was Solas????

Every Solas I have ever owned with the exception of the Dynafly has been way out of spec.

Oh, I bought the Solas Dynafly from IMPROS.

I think the skats are built to a slightly higher level of performance...........my new skat props always look "cut back" as compared to a new solas and sit closer to the hub....

just installed a new one a few weeks ago and had to space it away as it was binding....seems it was WAY cut back inside the hub of the prop

And to add something on-topic to the thread: My setback mag shaft was at least 1/4" too short if not more. It wore badly having only about half of the splines engaged. My mid-shaft was pressed in to spec at one time, but might have gotten bumped forward a little too, making the assembly about 1/2" further apart than it should have been. Splines are ruined... Currently on it's way to JetManiac for re-splining and lengthening.

I happened to have a spare pump assembled on the bench to compare it to, then when it bottomed out in the midshaft I had to do something. ScottS actually caught it the first time since I loaned him the pump to try out in his ski and it wouldn't fit without adjustments.

I almost pulled the pump today, broke it all down and measured everything but I am so happy to have my ski put back together that I decided to just leave it till next time.

When looking at the title I was not sure if this was going to have any sexual connotation or not. Sucks thats after all that money you pay, your not even guaranteed a properly fitting part. After reading this I am glad I got the Solas 12 Stator. Though it is not a setback, I would have gotten a set back if I didn't get the Solas Stator and would have potentially had to worry about this. Sure glad I bypassed that. I already have enough problems.

Going to pull my pump and tear it down tonight. I think I may know what happened now.

The Skat setback pumps use 2 different sized bearings, (1-6205 and 1-5205). I used a standard superjet bearing, (6205) in the front and rear which is narrower and therefore bottoms out further back.

Here's a difference...since Dave assembled this pump for me and I didn't pull the front bearing before I shipped it back, I actually haven't seen the bearing that is supposed to be in there. I am suspecting that it is much wider.?.?.? :dunno:

Edit: just spoke to the maniac and he comfirmed that the 5205 is a double load bearing and much wider so that is my problem. Unfortunately we dom't stock that one at work so I am off to order bearings.

i just had new bearings pressed in mine. ordered straight from skat-trak. the front brearing (closest to the motor) is double the size of the back bearing.

D-Roc

I forgot!
on my oem pump, the length of my driveshaft splined tip to the center hub surface is 541mm if your's is 2" setback you should add 50mm? not sure if that will help you.

Yup. I guess my OCD is slipping. I don't pay near as much attention to detail as I used to. I'm sure 75+ hr work weeks has nothing to do with it.

Is it ironic that I found the answer in a thread that I authored myself over a year ago?
http://www.x-h2o.com/threads/87268-...Mag-Pump-rebuild-parts-numbers-bearings-seals.

In my defense, I posted that while working on a 140mm non setback Mag pump and the detail about setback pumps was added by another member.
