My 701 Surf Rocker made it here

I purchased this a few weeks back and unfortunately our wonderful Postal Service here in the states lost it right out of customs. It finally found my door step today. I will post up some installation pics later, but for now here are my first impressions after unwrapping.

Let me start by saying that my expectations for this product was high after having a few and being around other 701 Industries products. I originally pictured in my mind that the Surf Rocker would be hollow molded much like the factory sponsons on say a Waiveraider, so when I picked the package up I was really shocked at the weight of the package. Not overly heavy by any means, but certainly heavier than a hollow molded part that I was expecting. Upon unwrapping, the weight made much more sense as the product is solid and strong, Now the weight is not enough that I feel it will overly weigh down or add too much weight to the bow of the ski, but enough to make for a solid product that will last. The mold is fantastic and well thought out as it actually has recesses molded in for the bolts that run through the bond rail to hold the front bumper on the ski. The spots for the screws are molded in as well and will make it easy to mark and drill the holes for screws to the bow. Overall, I am very pleased with my first hands on with the product and can certainly see the benefits that will outweigh the added weight and I can not wait to get it on the ski and in the water to test a little, if we ever get some surf around here. The one downside that I have is the off white color, however to be honest I knew when I ordered that the color was not going to match and thus not really a negative to the product. At the time I felt that it was my best option for the direction I was going. Just know that the white is not going to match perfect, but I feel that most will more than likely opt for one of the colored options or the black.

Also if you plan on installing one of these make sure that you have any parts that you pan to add or replace from in that area such as Bow Eye, and/or a Tow loop. Especially if you use your bow eye, as the bottom of the bow eye is no longer accessible. I will be installing a Hot Products Tow Loop to use in my case as well as Cold Fusion Bow eye.

As I said, I will post more pictures later as well as give another review after some riding, but I can't wait to see how it does in most riding conditions.

Things take extra long when they come from across the pond. I am waiting on a package from South Africa via Air mail (expedited service) and it is supposed to take 3 weeks to get here. Patience.....Patience...

Mine went from Australia on the 14th to through Customs on the 18th and then didn't show any updates on tracking at all. As a matter of fact, as I am typing this the post man just stopped back by to explain to me that their paperwork fell off the package and they found that and needed me to sign for it since it should have been signed for. It was our postal service issue in this case, but I do agree that patience is key when ordering from over seas.

How do you think this would compare to using some two part foam to shape and then putting glass/carbon over it?

You could very well do that and drop some weight from the design, however that would make a permenant hull mod and this is designed to be removable if needed. Also, the material used in this creates a bumper for the nose and would do more to protect the ski if you stab the nose.

I did put this on the bathroom scale, and it came out to 8 pounds. Yes that is some added weight, but I don't feel that it will be enough to negate the benefits. The way I look at it, when people cut and rocker the nose it ultimately moves more weight to the nose anyways since you have moved the nose back closer to the rider and engine. So I don't think it will mess with the balance as bad as some might think when comparing to a cut and rocker blaster.

Nice! Still waiting on the weather to cooperate here. Ski is on the trailer right now and It has been raining to much to get it moved into the garage on my stand! Planning to install mine tomorrow, but it will be about a week before I can ride with it on. Still waiting on my New Gas tank to come in.

Ok, I got the Rocker installed yesterday. Went pretty easy, however it is recommended to have a spare set of hands handy. You have to be able to flex the rocker a little to get it up in the bond rail.

Tools needed: 10mm wrench, Drill and drill bits (4mm bit roughly 1/8 inch, and 6.5mm roughly 1/4 inch), countersink bit, #3 Philips head (Prefer in a drill), a flat head screw driver (can help pry up the Front bumper, and a tube of 3m 5200 or 4200.

Make sure that you do anything on the front that you will want to do such as Bow eye or tow loop since you can not get to the back of the bond rail after the install.

1) Remove the nuts on the back of the bumper and fold the bumper up
2) Mark the center of the bond rail and then measure 110mm (4.33 inches to either side) roughly half way up the bond rail
3) Drill the two marked spots out with the 6.5mm (1/4) bit and then counter sink these 2 holes
4) position the Rocker into place and drill the bottom hole on either side with the 4mm (1/8) bit and screw in one of the 40mm screws in each to suck the bottom up
5) drill the top holes on the side of the rocker with the 4mm (1/8) bit and screw the remaining 2 40mm screws in these holes
6) drill the holes that go through the bond rail into the rocker and screw the 2 50mm long screws into these holes and the rocker is now dry fitted
7) remove the rocker and put a good amount of either 5200 or 4200 around the sides and bottom (Keep in mind that there are drain holes to allow water to drain so do not block them off
8) re-fit the rocker and screw in.
9) run a bit of 5200 or 4200 around the bond rail to secure the bumper and fold the bumper back down and press into place

A little video I did post installation. Please excuse my nervousness in the video as this is a new front for me, but I thought I would get a few of my thoughts on the product and the install on video.

Ok, so I got a little time on the rocker in the surf yesterday. All I can say is that it really helps the ski ride the face of the wave and not plow through it. Certainly worth every penny I spent on it. Even if you try to push the nose down when you hit a wave it still wants to stay on the face of the wave. There were a few other guys out that I let take it out, and they really liked what they felt, however our riding time was cut short. The midshaft started growling, and on my way back to the beach I landed off of one wave and grabbed the throttle, but the engine reved but ski went nowhere. It took out my driveshaft. I didn't get any video, I forgot to hit record before I left the beach, and I reached up on my helmet to hit it when I was in the big swells of the past and ended up loosing it and then wore myself out getting beat up with big waves of cold water trying to get back on. I will fix the ski and be back out to get more video. Maybe some of the guys that rode it yesterday will jump on and give some of their thoughts also.

Im glad you got a little go on it mate. Once you spend more time in the saddle is when you really start to understand how good a improvement they are. The number one issue with you remounting that ski in a hurry is that stock seat. I have currently have put other projects on hold to try and bring to market at purpose built freestyle seat that is affordable, has all the grab rails built in for supermans etc, and looks Bad Arse.
Now is the best time to buy a Surf Rocker for members of the X. Until midnight , the ON-LINE SHOP has free freight to any members. Put the code in the coupon box XH20 and it will deduct the freight. Remember, all prices are in AUD so even cheaper in US $. http://www.701industries.com/index.php/store
I have sent heaps of these Rockers to the States so im sure when the Weather warms up we will get some more feed back .
Mid shafts stripping I thing is the number one pain for the Blaster. I believe because they are heavier than say a Super Jet and the way a Blaster lands from big jumps is the cause for shaft failure. I once spent some time on researching how to fix this issue, but at this stage its back on the back burner.

You know that I will be waiting in line for your purpose built surf seat. I wore myself out trying to clime back on. I could get my knees on and arms on the seat, but every time I reached up to the bars a wave would wash me off! Just more time in the waves and I will get it, but a seat is needed for sure.

Having a shorter seat and a bit lower is the key for mounting from the rear. This allows you to hop up on the back deck and grab the bars. Once you have grabbed the bars, you then have balance. With the stock seat, you have to clear the hump first and then reach for the bars. The ski by this time is usually barrel rolling under you. The mod seat makes side mounting a breeze as well. Wont let you get hung up by your life vest being caught by the large seat. There's nothing like practise .

Looks awesome I can't wait to get one it's one of my next orders! I have an off topic question about the shipping. I'm in Texas and ordered from 701industries yesterday, about how long do yal think my order will take to get here? About how long did it take yals?

Expect a week and a half to two weeks normally, however there have been a few items that have gone through customs and then got lost when they moved on to USPS. I haven't had that happen in a while on my orders, but there were a few all around the same time that had the issue. Not Dave's fault, it was our great Postal Service here in the States.
