MSD ignition help

Installing MSD ignition in 2017 SJ. Quick question. It looks like stock setup has battery cable coming out of starboard.

Wiring diagram from MSD has battery coming out of port so I had to swap the leads. which is correct?

Man I hope its the latter because its all back together

First pic is stock leads. Second is wiring diagram 20200119_153110.jpg20200119_153110.jpgScreenshot_20200208-152914_Hancom Office Editor.jpg

Whichever wire had the little pigtail with the fuse should go to battery. I don’t believe it actually matters which side of the relay they are on.

I see. So swapping the cables on the relay doesn't matter?

The lead with the pigtail will indeed go to the battery once I get it all hooked up

I mean that’s how I understand it. The relay just essentially connects the two wires when you hit the start button

Portside Red Cable goes to Starter. Starboard Red Cable goes to Starter.

If you are facing FWD, Left Red Cable goes to Starter, Right Red Cable goes to Battery.

Do not reverse these Cables. You will blow the Fuse or Melt one of the Cables. Let me know which one...

You sure about this? This is not what I am being told?

Or maybe I confused you. Yes on stock setup starboard goes to battery and port to starter. But I switched mine at the relay.

So really my question is does it matter where they hook up on the relay as long as cables are correct. Im being told no it doesn't

Look at solenoid positive side as circled in red. Incoming battery lead along with fused lead going to CDI takes power
Direct from battery. You will also see a small brown wire that goes to the start switch on bars. This also takes power from the positive terminal. When your start switch is pressed, this energizes the solenoid to send power to the starter, and CDI, thus turning over motor. If you put the battery to the slave side of solenoid, You will creat a direct fault, as this is also ground side of solenoid. The start switch will not operate as it does not have power to operate the solenoid. You will more than likely damage wiring inside ebox, and possibly solenoid and CDi because of this fault. Sounds to me, you are not reading the schematic correctly. If all your doing is installing a new MSD Enhancer? You should not have to move the wiring off the solenoid

The stock setup on my SJ was not like the wiring above. The battery cable was on the right side. Opposite above.

Mine is wired now exactlty like the schematic. But it involved swapping the cables

The diagram I marked is the one you provided in your 1st post, i just marked it. It is the msd instructions, and they are correct. You just flipped to box upside down and disoriented yourself. Before you fry all your components, open the box, and verify correct connections.

I dont think I disoriented myself.

If the battery cable has to go next to the coil as JC suggested then the MSD is wrong. Either that or it doesn't matter where they go.

No reason to move the power cables for a msd install, but you can switch the 2 battery cables on the solenoid/relay, it will make no difference. As long as the correct cable goes to the battery with the pigtail, and the other one goes to the starter.
