That tank looks cool. If that is all you need for your riding sessions, nice! (close for fill ups). One thing you might like to do is add a little insulation on the top aluminum hold down. Perhaps a piece of old bicycle inner tube or something. Sparky is not your friend with gas fumes. :nono:

so the X-metal water box is lighter, but is i lighter because its BUILT lighter? or because it doesnt hold any water?

why not totally do away with the water box, and run rear exhaust ( below the waterline) to squelch the noise?

would that not be lighter and dryer still?

i think waterboxes help stop water flowing back into the chamber/manifold/cylinder, especially when the ski rolls on its side. ski could die out or sputter while cleaning out the water.

Yep, a ski with no waterbox is obnoxious and sounds like shiot. There used to be a guy years ago that came to the same spot we rode that had a SN with straight exh. That thing was nasty loud and it just pissed everybody off that was within site of him. The guy was a jerk and did not care, he thought it sounded good and that it gave him more power. Wrong on both accounts, what a tool.

The X-metal is very loud with the front exh, and I would guess that it would be quite a bit louder than stock even in rear only mode. All you would have to do is cap off the T and run the rear only. I have only heard one with both so I can only guesstimate what it would sound like in rear only mode but I think it would be acceptable. Try it, if people flip you off and cuss then you will have your answer.

the x metal is lighter than my sn and rn ffp alum boxes. it holds less water, quicker clean out if it does get full, has a nice well designed tee to run front and or back exhaust. the tee is above the bondline which means it is higher than the water level so it shouldn't be able to fill up and back flow into the motor if your floating. it has lots of baffles in it from what you can see in there. it is loud but i don't mind loud.

Here's the funny thing.
I have an annoying TDR waterbox that I ran with rear only. With my 650 the sound was high pitched and a pain in the long run but with my new motor it seams like the highs got toned down and it runs much quieter now.
Today I installed my front exhaust (still run the rear) and it's not any louder than before with the 650.

The X-metal box is lighter than stock, holds much less water and can be run as rear only by blocking off the front or call Pat and order one without the T.

Tell you what Lake, when I finally get an x-metal waterbox I'll send you my TDR to try.

The weight difference between that and the SN box more than makes up for the noise.

I have SOME sort of aluminum box in my sons white ski, it is obnoxiously loud.

cant recall what brand it is off the top of my head, I appreciate the offer Boris, but I sort of like the stock box in my black boat, it IS heavy though, thats why I was asking!

what straps did you end up using

I just used the stock gas tank ones. The short one I used on the left side where I hooked to the battery box. I hooked the long strap to the hook that I bolted to one of the places the battery box used to bolt to. It was too long, so I just tied a knot in it (back side so that it can't be seen) to tighten it up. The tank is VERY secure, and I stuck 2 layers of hydroturf on the bottom of it per riverrat's recommendation.

It sounds like you have a carb issue instead of a fuel problem. Your ski will run close to a minute with just the gas in the carb alone. Try running the ski then shutting the fuel valve off. The ski won't die instantly it runs for awhile and you said that spilled fuel in teh bilge made it run funny..... You can fill mine full and it doesn't effect it enough that you notice.

What is weird though is that it ran perfectly fine before I spilled the gas in the bilge. Other than the shutoffs when it turned on its side for at least 5 or so seconds. I put the new tank in, was stupid enough to not use a funnel the first time I filled up and some gas spilled. Now all of a sudden it will idle fine some, but then just speed up for no reason with my finger not even on the throttle. The carbs were rejetted recently, and brand new needles and seats were installed, along with new springs. It runs fine other than the retarded idling now. I may tear it down and see, I can't ride right now anyways... had a fountain go wrong and ski dove between my legs, my bars are all jacked up now. Think I will just order some solid 6061 bar now so it doesn't bend again.

Nice set-up hermanns! I think I will try that tank for my current build... looks like it straps in better then my current Kart setup.

Did you put a second pickup in the gas cap?

Looks like the gas cap is the vent on the web page, And then single pickup and return.

Thanks, yes it straps in really good. It won't move at all. Yes, it is single pickup and return, and I bored a hole in the gas cap and added that fitting for the check valve.

Since lake doesn't want it, I would be interested if you want to get rid of it. Any idea how much lighter it is vs. stock with water in it? I ride on a big lake, that is empty pretty much always when I ride, so I wouldn't mind the noise much. Let me know.

I live on the lake I ride on, and I really only use about half that tank at a time, if I did need to though, I would just pull up to my house to refill, so not a big deal.

As for the channel holding the battery down, all it is compressing if that 2 straps that hold the battery in the battery box. It isn't actually touching the battery, but the last 2 days of riding it has held up perfect, and the ski floats almost completely level, whereas before it leaned heavily to the right.
