Motor wont crank with plugs in.

The motor wont crank with spark plugs in.

Things i have looked at

I have run spare baterry directly to starter pos and neg terminal. Cant be electrical wires or battery as same problem occurs. Also did this with a battery for a v8 motor so cant be a cranking amp issue.

I pulled off bendix. Cant find an issue with it.

Motor spins by hand with plugs in or out.

I tipped ski updide down to see if any water in motor. Nothing of interest came out.

Pulled off exhaust in case anything causing a pressure lock nothing found.

Held onto starter motor cog with flywheel and bendix off using a rag. Cant stop it from spinning it just heated up my hand.

I am now lost. If i can crank motor by hand with plugs in. Then if the starter is at fault why cant i stop it spinning by hand.

Dont have a spare starter to chuck in to test.

Sounds like your starter is bad. It is working but doesnt have the power to turn under a heavy load. This is common and is usually caused by a stuck brush inside the starter. You can try removing it and taking it apart to see if its a stuck brush or a broken part. Just pay close attention to where all the little parts and shims go.

Its weird because i had a starting issue a few weeks ago. I tore down starter cleaned and checked it and it was ok.

Checked everything again that time and found a faulty negative wire which was resulting in Torque for starter issues which is fixed.

If the starter motor is faulty i dont see why i cant hold the cog and it still spins.

Maybe i can pull it off and get it load tested. As starters are expensive if i buy 1 and i didnt need to.

It will turn with 3 outta the 4 brushes making contact but it wont have any torque.

I pulled starter apart and found the back cover full of filings. One of the bushes was ground down to the metal housing.

Weird cause when i put it back together 3 weeks ago after cleaning it looked ok. There is no play in the front gear to cause it to go off center. Springs still have tension on the bushes.

I located in sydney and Superjet oem starters expensive here like $600. I gonna swap the backing plate on a kawi starter and use that.

I am wondering how it managed to wear the brush off to start with though. The backing plate i would have thought should have held the centre axle centred i would have thought not allowing it to grind down the brush. I will check the plate for movement later today.

Any ideas of the cause ?

If the bushing at the end is good i would guess that maybe that brush was pulling all the current and overheated. This could happen if the other brushes were stuck and not making good contact. Good luck fixing it.

It might be worth contacting OzFreeride member Ovey on that site. He's always building 'ski's and lives in Sydney (Sutherland area). He's not really a seller of parts but might have something spare. Costs nothing to ask.
