I have a JD metal one in what is going to be my freeride ski. I just look at it like insurance. I have never broken one with years of riding, racing, etc. But, no matter how you look at it, metal is stronger than plastic.
For racing, I always stick to the stocker because it matches up better to the hull. I would rather have to work with the intake grate to get the desired hook up, than have a metal shoe that is solid and isn't adjustable.
Food for thought.
