For most people, getting on a personal watercraft is a fun pastime for the occasional lake outing. But for Jared Ajlouny it's a lot more than that.
The 20-year-old San Jose resident is ranked No. 1 in the United States in competitive freestyle jet skiing, an extreme water sport that he's been participating in for two years.
"It is a unique challenging sport with some of the best people I've met," says Ajlouny, who took third in the International Jet Sports Boating Association world finals held at Lake Havasu City, Ariz., in October.
Ajlouny's got a busy year ahead of him, too, with plans to graduate from San Jose State University in May with a marketing degree. And like lots of solo athletes, he's looking for sponsors to help him go pro.
He's signed up one so far - sportswear maker Liquid Militia - but is looking for more to compete on the American Power Boat Association pro circuit. You can check out some of his moves at myspace.com/jetskijared.
