look at what everyone runs and how they ride and choose whos advice you want to take.... when i went from a 144 to a 148 on a 840cc motor my tricks improved dramatically. I can back up my statements with my riding... can all of you????:cheer2:

i'm not saying yay or nay to what someone wants to choose or not...but when a professional builder suggests you use a 140mm pump for the motor that he built...you listen to what he says.

fwiw...i don't have a mag pump, nor am i much more than a decent rider. this isn't about who has more skills, balls, etc. all i'm saying is that if the person who built your ski says go with a 140 or 144 or 148...u listen to what the guy says...he knows best.

the one in my sn is a 142. i have 3 140's and 1 148. and 1 140 set back. most of the mag pumps came on the used market due to racers going to kawasaki. i grabed all i could find.

Brendan(thin mint) is talking about Kawasaki style mag pumps.
I'm pretty sure that's what the q8 is set up for.
My boy Joe P is using the Solas 140 12vein in his limted sxr. I've put a few hrs on his boat and it hooks up great. Our boats were very close in top end and I was using a 6 vein Skat.

Here a pic of the 6 vein in my old limited. It came out of 1 of Victor Sheldons old boats.

What do you run the 148 in?

Maybe you landed a better combination with the 148 compared to what you thought was a good combination in the 144.

well no :):):):)! lol

Seriously though... the ski ripped and i tried a lot of props. I was able to to backys and flairs fine, however, when i went to the 148 i was getting super close to double backys and they were higher.

Jared, I think he meant you hit a better impeller/nozzle/cone/pump combination with the 148 than with the 144.

This is one of the biggest reasons the mag pump isn't on my 'wish list' yet. I've read a lot of talk about what the best diameter mag pump is but it's really rare to hear anyone discuss what prop they have.

In a fairly vague comparison, a swirl 13/18 is similar to a hooker 9/15 which is similar to a concord 13/16 but I have no clue what any of those would be similar to in a 140, 142, 145, 148mm mag pump. New props or repitching props in addition to the initial cost of a mag pump is not exactly something I would consider a cost effective experiment.

trying to find the right pump for my combo, which im doing research.
Ill figure it out since all this topic seems to be in most mag threads is an arguement

i look at it this way

2 guys go into a store to buy condoms (to please their women later)

1 buys trojans nothing special

the other buys magnums...
which little teenie bopper do you think will be happier later that night?

I dont think its called a magnum for nothing

thanks

But: what if the guy that purchased the 'magnum'; couldn't exactly..um, use it to its potential?

Nothing higher than a 13 on the first number?
We have less than 14psi to work with until water boils over the tops of the blades. Maintaining positive pressure is very difficult at low speeds. This is why smaller diameter 140 pumps work well on race boats and sitdowns. Larger diameter impellers with flatter blades do noticeably better from 0 to about 15mph. The stock 144 pump is very good with props up to 16 degrees spinning 7000-7200rpm. This is good for over 600 pounds of static thrust and just happens to be where a good stock stroke engine will run. Strokers need a larger pump because they cant turn any faster and adding pitch on a 144 makes them cavitate more until you get moving. A pressure gauge, thrust meter, and tachometer has suggested that the area in front of the prop and pitch of the blades has more important to freestyle performance.
