Surfriding Looking for some advice on which direction I should go

I am looking to you guys for some advice on which direction I should go with my new addiction to riding in the surf. I currently ride a 1994 fx1 which was completely stock until a few months ago when I installed a set of footholds/hood straps/limiting rope/and surf seal. As you can see my intention was to ride this ski in the surf and not look at getting a different ski. However lately I am starting to consider selling the fx1 for a RN Superjet as it seems like it's a better platform for the surf. My question is should I continue putting money into the fx1 (reinforce, head, pipe) or get out early and purchase a SJ and go from there. Thank guys for your help!

***I really don't want to do the jet modification to the fx1

You need to find out who the guy is that rocks Frankie and ask him. He surf rides his FX1 and makes the SJs look boring.

Yeah the Fx1 seems like a great hull, it's light and fast. I just don't want to get "done" with it and find myself wishing I purchased a SJ a long time ago. I pretty much want to build a ski that I can learn to back flip on and barrel roll :) Those are my two goals I have riding in the surf, if the fx1 will get me there without doing a pump swap I will keep building away!

FX1 can be made into a great "surf" ski (with pump mod and tubbies). If you want to do flips and rolls get a SJ.

The FX Mafia dudes ride a lot, which is probably the biggest reason why they ride so effing good.

The pump mod is not difficult at all

I seen fx1's ripping this summer at Brigantine and it made me wanna get rid of my SN and pick up an FX1. I think you might kick youself in the long run getting rid of an fx1, being as they are rare(rn's are still being produced and you can always find them) and look like a fun ski to ride.

An FX1 is better for smaller riders that have good balance. The pump must be changed to get decent thrust, especially in surf.

Well it looks like I am going to keep the fx1, you guys have been a great help! I just purchased a set of tubbies yesterday and will start looking into doing the pump swap.

Contact specialFX or flashFX or nuklear6 , they are the source for all that is fx1...there are many other resources here too.. These guys are the fx mafia and will show you what is necessary for a surf setup. Good luck...

Are there any SJ owners where you ride? If so ask if you can take it for a spin and see what you think.

Keyboard jockeys can tell you their opinions all day, it really comes down to what you want, like, and the style you ride.

I have a RN SJ that already has 3 inches cut off of the back, rear bondline is trimmed and is like a kick tail(like the bob) front tubbies(destroyers), RRP adjustable footholds, thrust lowered hood, and re-inforced inside engine bay. PM me if interested, im just up north in cali but am coming down south soon. Its a great surf platform for sure, only reason I am about to post it for sale is because I picked up a rickter.

Thanks Camojoe, I would love to be able to afford that but just reading your description I don't think selling my FX1 +$1000.00 would get me to your asking price, but thank you!

Since you plan on doing the pump swap in your fx1, make sure you budget enough time for it. I am currently glassing in the Tom21 144 mold into my fx1. Since I am still working on it, I cannot attest to how much it helps. What I can attest to is that it takes quite a bit of time and money to do, which means you will be off the water for some time. Just wanted to let you know that so you will know what you are getting into. But if you just wanted to leave the 122 inlet and bore it out (the pump shoe) and put the 144 pump in, that would not take much time at all. Good luck man, I share the same fx1 love

Instead of starting a new thread I figured I would just keep this one going.....

I picked up a set of Blowsion Tubbies and was trying to find a thread on how to do a Step by Step installation on these but came up short. My question is how far back should I put them and should the bottom of the Tubbie be flush with the bottom of the ski or up a little? I got the tubbies from a member who never installed them, they didn't come with any instructions though.

The 140 pump swap is pretty simple. I read all the pump swap threads (Special FX, Flash FX, Wavehog just to name a few good ones) before I got started so there was no guess work. As for the blowsion tubbies, I would mount them flush with the bottom and as far forward as you can. You may have to trim those a little to fit well on an Fx1.
