Legalities of riding in the Pacific Ocean

Hey everybody great website,

I have always been curious about riding in the surf on the central or southern coast of california, obviously it is completely legal to ride in the ocean. My question is what are the actual rules set forth by the coast guard on riding in the surf??? does anyone actually know?? I am all for it but it would be nice to know before putting my skis in the water. I guess all it would take is to talk to the fellas at the coast guard station in morro bay. Just curious because it does look like a lot of fun. I am sure there are a couple gray areas. I'd rather beg for forgiveness than ask for permission!

You will find that as soon as your pump leaves the water, iyou risk being done for 'reckless boating'. It sucks, but it's up to the Officer that is watching, and his 'interpretation' of the law.

Just stay away from the swimmers at Pismo, and don't get run over once you're back on the beach.

if your a beginner just go to pismo and ride with all the other guys...dont go ask at the coast guard station..last thing we need is to bring attention to ourselves...everyone rides near the grand ave entrance every weekend at 7am..no one bothers you there..if you go ask at the coast guard station they will tell you your not allowed to be within 200yrd of a breaking wave...no one bothers you at pismo though....granted the waves are generally crap but if your just starting you wont know the difference anyways...plus its good to ride with other people at first

anyone know of a good place in Northern cal to ride ocean? pismo is several hours away. looks like so much fun.

The only other place we ride that is not 5 Hrs away is Miller Park Sacramento. EJ hates lakes :twak: so thats the closest he gets to a wave is large boats/Yachts pulling off what the river rats call a perfect standing Wake.

You can hit the bay look for tug boats they throw some huge multi wakes the biggest you find out-side a wave.

Other then that like most the northern cali boys they make the trip to Pismo more then they would like a month.

What about mendocino or Ft. Bragg in nor cal? As soon as I get my ski going and round up a beach cart I'll be hitting up some local spots up here if anyone wants to tag along. I will have a photographer shooring pics too.

Once my pig is ready and I'm headed north all you will have to do is drive to santa rosa and I'll drive from here. I know of a few local spots 30 min north of fort bragg that are really nice and secluded that I'm gonna hit up. Anyone that would want to come and ride or hang is always invited.

we have been all over the N. coast with Coung trying to find a spot and you can not beach your ski you have to stay 200yrds -/+ from shore. Dam tree huggers. Its a fine if caught. We have talked with coast gaurd and contact so many beachs and its all the same all the way down South. Contact Coung or EJ they can give you more info on that. However if you do find a spot close to us that you can bank and ride where the waves break i know all the N. Cali guys will be wanting to ride. Good Luck

I don't know if anyone if has been around the little town of west port but there is a little beach just called blues just north of west port and you can still drive on the beach there. It is far enough away from everything that no one should really care.

Im sure our guys are up for that. Will do some research after the JK ride and have some time. Can they bank the skis? I know the waves get huge in that area for sure....
Thanks for the info...

it is far enough out of town you wont be seen driving on the beach 4x4 req'd and yes it's sand do you can beach them. The only people that really go out there are high school kids to party on the weekends but they don't really go out there anymore.
