do what i did, buy some trailer guides or make your own, then mount the lights up there, that way, nothing goes into the water and you dont have to worry about lights breaking or rusting, and the guides help when backing down at the boat ramp, especially if you have a higher truck or steep ramp
I am surprised to hear so many people having problems with them. I have had mine for over a year now with absolutely no problems--and I just used the cheap crimped butt connectors. I have not used them in salt water. I don't know what brand mine are, but they were the cheapest I could find.
I use them on my trailer as well as the RV's we build. Please be aware that many of the LED lights on the market do not have the required reflectors. This has been a source of several recent RV related recalls. They also have markings indicating their DOT approved use. Some can be used only for markers, some tail but not stop, etc.
We used Innovative Lighting and Command Electronics. I have several samples in my office. They are completely sealed. I have had no issues using them in salt water for three years.
I went to my local trailer supply place and inquired about LED lights for two trailers that I own. I asked are these completely submersible? He said they rate them this way, but they aren't. He has tried to source American made LED lights, but he can not find any whatsoever. All the lights come from China and also from the same factory. They are just labeled differently when they go to each distributor. My trailer store used to advertise them as submersible but they no longer do because they have had so many issues. The one thing they have had success were using the LED bulbs that fit into the typical light socket (1157?). Because the LED's don't produce heat like a standard bulb when braking down the launch ramp, they don't burst when hitting the cold water.
I finally got smart and im going to buy pvc and put it up both sides in the back of the trailer so I can see it behind my huge truck and im going to mount the lights at the top of the pvc so they never get wet.
