KTM maybe?

I found a 2000 300exc about 2 hrs away. It's the original owner and he says that he rode it probably less than 25 rides since new. It's on the original top end. I think I might be able to get permission to buy it wink wink. He's asking $1750. Is that fair? Here's the potential snag. I'm going to call the county courthouse here to check on things. The guy never titled it. He says that he has the original MSO. If I have his MSO and a bill of sale from him, will I be able to title it?

too old and seems expensive for 8 years old... Definitely get a title w/ it, so keep looking. I don't believe that it has the original top end either...

In Missouri he would have to title it first and pay taxes. Without his name on the title he actually does not own it. He would be selling you a bike without a title. I go to court on mine next month the guy I bought mine off of refused to pay his taxes and late fees. Katie was in the same boat with her KTM except the guy is taking care of it for her.

Check with your DMV before you buy the bike if you can't title it and say it gets stolen you are out because you actually don't own it.

That price is about the max of my budget. I have other things that I'll be dropping some money on soon so I can't go crazy with this.

ok.... go take a look at it... it does look clean, but an 8 year old top end is scary to me

It not how old the top end is its how many running hours are actually on it,a lot of peeps buy stuff like this and never use it,I see it on couches all the time.

I Alabama no off road vehicles are sold with titles,MSO's only, sometimes you can have one titled if the finance company insists on it though.

The guy is the original owner and he says less than 200 hours. I know that would be a lot for a race bike, but I don't know about something like this. He says that most years he averaged about 2 rides per year, which would explain why it looks decently clean for being a 2000

I just walked away from what seemed like a good deal on a WR400f yami. I just didn't really know what those tops ends could handle. I mean my GS850 has 33k and runs great but are they similar?

How much does it cost to have a 4 stoke bike rebuilt?

KTM bikes are titled as a motorcycle not off road only.

200 hours seems like a lot and may need a top end but a compression check can determine that. A top end kit is only about $160.

ive seen yami 4strokes with hundreds of hours on a top-end.

ive seen yami 4strokes blow up with a few dozen hours.

depends on a lot of things i would say... rider and rider style would be a HUGE factor!

a simple top-end rebuild of "preventative" maintenance would be just a few hundred bucks (i did one on my yz450f).. however, if you do something like swallow a valve and really tear up a motor inside, you could be looking at 1500 easy

im in the process of rebuilding my topend on my yz125 again right now..

cyl $280.... piston kit $130.... head $80... misc crap $30ish... so, about 500 at the end of the day... just a top end.

it could have come out a little cheaper if i didnt replace the head (i dont like how much mine is pitted tho) and if i just sent out my cyl to get replated (about $220), but, i'd just rather get new OEM parts.. the price diff is so negligible. im putting a brand new cyl and brand new head on my bike for just a few bucks more than it would cost to repair.

if you buy it, just know you will be required to possibly drop up to another grand into it. Between a new top end, and a compleate tear down to regrease and/or replace bearings and seals and other consumables. just because it was not ridden alot in 8 yrs doesnt mean that it's been properly maintained

Maybe I don't need one then. I'm not dropping 2500 into one right now. It's just not high enough on my priority list.

KTM maybe

............ and 2 stroke top ends are EASY! Way easier and cheaper than that 4 stroke YZF. The early YZF's top ends lasted a long while tho'. I had a YZ250F (2001) untill last year. Never replaced the top end, only 1 valve adjustment in those 6 - 7 years. Is still going strong under it's new owner.
Now my current ride CRF250r has already gone thru a set of valves in around 10 months..........

those hondas have a valve swallowing reputation tho! the yamis are known to be pretty bulletproof. thats why i always ride blue, however, for some reason, i can break just about anything... and often thats what i do!

all I'm saying is that on an 8 yr old bike that has "low hours" odds are the guy rides it, washes it and forgets about it. he probably doesnt grease his swing arm, steering or anything else regularly as that would require tearing things apart. seals dry rot. 8 yr old grease is bad grease. and water intrusion into that that has been there THAT long...can you imagine? fluids also need to be changed. this is all routine stuff.

I'm not saying you HAVE to do this if you get it, but it bears looking into. give the bike a closer look. talk to the guy. find out what type of riding he does, and what his maintenance schedules look like. it may be ok... but it may NOT be too. Buyer beware...ya dig?

Didn't you have a Kawasaki 450F?
How did it hold up ? I heard there were some issues with piston breakage. I've promised myself that if I have future issues with the CRF that I will go back to 2 strokes. A buddy has a new YZ 250 that is nice on the track and in the woods. All it needed was a pipe.
