Krash repower

Haven’t ridden in years and wanted to get out on the water to beat this Texas heat.

Picked up a Footrocket with seized 997, water got in over winter… not sure crank can be R&Rd, rust in bearings but rest looks ok. Sleeves and pistons have a nice patina.

Otherwise the ski looks real purdy.

Big question is to rebuild the 997 or go with Yama … I already know what most will say but the 997 seems like it has so much potential, and wouldn’t have to piece together all the long block parts.

I was more concerned about the reliability of the 997... don't want to dump money if it's not worth it. I'm sure there are some issues like every motor, but by know (hopefully) they are all known... JS Powersports has a good FAQ.

Crank bearings are pretty bad, I put about 50ft/lb of torque to try to spin it. It's stuck pretty good. But I'm sure one can source replacement bearings tho and find someone to rebuild it (can't imagine the bearings being proprietary). That leaves me with looking for new rods or bore and find larger needle bearings. Piston sleeves if I can find them, otherwise it will be pretty loose with existing pistons and new rings.

I know of a few active vendors on the site, anyone else local near Dallas that could rebuild a crank and machine rods? Otherwise I don't mind sending it off...

oh, and thanks for the words of encouragement... will start the diesel soak until i figure out parts.

My take on your situation after helping a friend with a 997 reaper and a newer 1200 foot rocket. Regardless of the condition of the motor, between a few days and a year from now something electrical will hiccup and you'll be scouring for replacement parts. not just the typical starter and bendix, but stator and cdi. I've been inside a 2018 cdi and it isn't built for vibration. You can swap the cdi for a zeel and that will fix most of the issues. Swapping the krash carbs for real mikunis will also be a good upgrade. Although you can put real mikuni parts in them, the machined castings are terrible and are probably lacking shaft seals too. I'd rather ask my buddies if they have a spare yamaha part to get me back on the water in a few days than wait weeks for a krash part to come in.

Pistons. Looks like water was in it over winter then he started it up in spring, hence the rust/iron transfer?

Ok, decided to rebuild the 997 as it’s looking a lot better after cleaning it up and realizing it won’t require a ton of parts.

Ran a ball hone through the cylinders, cleaned up well. Pistons scrubbed with light oil and a fine ss brush. One looks good, one looks to have stress cracks on the skirt and needs to be replaced.

Sent off the crank to CrankWorks, they‘ve rebuild these before, in fact there was another one in front of mine on their list. Krash was kind enough to give me specs on the bearings and seals, mix of SeaDoo and Yammi, nothing special.

Im workin on a compatibility list of parts and will post here in a bit.
