Thanks guys. I know it's gonna be a long recovery, that much I was told upfront. The knee was worse than Dr expected, so total replacement is in my future. The big issue was the "unload" or straightening. That required a wedge being cut out of the bone and the bone graft. Dr thought it would be a 2 -3 hr. operation, due to issues with the hardware and the "wedge" part of the deal (end piece of bone broke during surgery) going south the operation took 6 + hrs. But I am glad to be healing. Staples should come out this Thursday -YAHOO!

TBone, I was told several years ago after my first knee surgery thaat my leg was VERY bowed and would causeme issues later. Was advised that it needed to be broken to be straightened. Ten years later, it became unbearable so I went to the orthopedic to see what the current fix was - unloading as it's called involves cutting a wedge out of the bone and straightening it. My lower leg was bowed 9 degrees. So then the bone graft, etc. Unfortunately the knee itself was in very bad shape (lot of bone on bone ) so, nothing could be done at the time.

No he will not!
Oh no, I didn't even know you were planning on getting fixed  I hope you get all the support from this group that I had last summer, it definately helps keep your spirits up while your watching TV :cheer:

:::Thanks to you and everybody else for keeping me going BTW:arms: :::

I guess you've been down this road before? Good luck, and don't take any short cuts! And don't you have any better pictures???

Moon, the wedge was cut out of my leg not foot - it allowed the lower leg to be straightened. Unfortunately during surgery after the wedge was cut, the end piece of bone broke while Dr was straightening it causing him to have to go back into the knee again to make sure no damage done there when the bone broke.

Yes I decided between jobs to get it taken care of. It's been a source of pain for years now. Only a few peeps were aware of the operation, BK, my fam,a few former employees. I am VERY happy with the show of support from this group. THANK YOU ALL.
As for pics, my wife was reluctant to take the two pics she took. Of the two. that is the best one. I'm gonna' try and get pics of the x rays this Friday when the staples are removed.

I know there is no way you could do it now but when you start to feel better don't push it and try to stand or walk. I broke my ankle about ten years ago, didn't "stay off of it" as the doc said and now 10 years later it still bothers me everyday.

Hope it gets better soon

9 Days After

Drugs are Vicodin ES - 120 Pills!!! Well that's how many there were..........
I have weeded myself off of them pretty much tho'. The nerve block and direct inject morphine (every 6 mins. if needed) in the hospital was way cool. I stopped using the morphine button at 6 a.m. the day after the surgery as it was not necessary with the nerve block. But I had them remove the nerve block the same morn so I could go home days early. That may have been a mistake! The real pain was waking up after surgery and waiting for the nerve block. WOW!!! That was real pain!

Tim

Thanks for the well wishes!

9 Days After - Update

Ok here is the x ray showing hardware. You can see the bone that was removed and filled in by the allograft using cadaver donated bone. Dr. said the wedge was 15 mm at one end! At time of surgery, lower leg bowed 9 degrees! The 'navigator' attached to my upper and lower leg showed when they got it straight and also measured a before operation loss of movement to the rear of 5 degrees. After surgery, due to straightening I lost an additional 2.5 degrees for a total of 7.5 .
At my Dr. appointment Friday (15 days after surgery) I was told that my recovery is excellent and that I had regained most if not all rear ward movement even though I am restricted by the immobilizer around my leg. Staples were removed Friday also. Dr Wong said that due to the other end of the bone breaking during surgery, I am unable to begin bending it for an additional 2 weeks. And no weight on it for 6 more. Then it's PT time!

Note in the first X ray you can see the holes drilled in the bone (lower leg) to attach the navigator sensor. The other sensor connected to my femur (not shown) in similar fashion and together were used to determine when alignment was correct.

Chic, I asked for the "Firefox" option as in the Clint Eastwood movie Firefox. Told Dr to leave the wiring exposed so I could connect it directly to the throttle and the trim. That way all I have to do is think it -and it happens.
Of course Kim wanted the GPS so she knows at all times where I am. LOL
