JS550 Ticking from Front Cylinder when running.

Hey guys any ideas what could cause a fairly loud ticking sound from the front cylinder? It runs fine and has 165/165 compression. I removed the plug wires and did a few test. If I crank the engine without a plug in the front cylinder it sounds fine, as soon as I install the plug and crank I can hear the tick. The piston is NOT touching the plug. I put a bore scope in the hole and everything looks fine. Going to pull it, but wanted to see if anyone has run into this before?

I have to ask what kind of compression gauge are you using , if that's a piston port motor it does not run that kind of compression, a reed valve motor does at any rate most likely the piston to cylinder wall clearance is way out of spec.

How long have you had the ski? When is the last time the engines been apart and inspected? All two-stroke skis are ready for some work, most of them are antiques. If you want one to be reliable they need to be basically restored.

Usually what happens on these is they are completely worn out because the pistons are single ring pistons , compression on these is already low , then someone slaps a high compression head on a worn out top end and since it now has compression again it runs ok for a short period of time till it starts showing it's age again , what Kevbo said is pretty much spot on.

Basically, what everbody is saying here is.........stop running it and tear it completely down for inspection.
Basically what we are telling you is that no one here can tell you exactly what is making your ticking noise , we can give it our best educated guess but that's it , if I had the machine here in person I could probably crank it up, listen to it and tell you , but sight unseen and not heard I or anyone else here cannot.
