300/440/550 JS550 sounds strong on land, but runs like crap in the water

I took my JS550 out for the first time yesterday, when I start it up on land and hit the throttle it sounds good. Then, when I try to ride it, it goes very slow, I can't even get it to fully plane at full throttle. It runs like it's struggling, the engine revs up and down randomly. On top of this, it cuts out if I let off the throttle and it's very difficult to get it started. Any ideas what could be causing these problems?

I had/have a similar problem with 2 of my skis. Unfortunatly it could be a number of things. My fx-1 was all over the map. RPM's would be reving out 1minute and bogging out the next. I literaly did everything to solve that problem. Here's the thread on it

Im currently have a major bogging problem on my roomates superjet. runs great out of water then after about 10seconds on the water it bogs right out. im going through the jets right now and cleaning the carbs.

GOOD LUCK MATE! hopefully this helps

yes try new plugs!! NGK b7es or b8es

also gap them to the low end of the spec. if you go ignition problems it will run better with a smaller gap.

then check this stuff
pop off pressure- may have a leaking neadle valve or pop off could be to high.
ohm check the stator coils
ohm check the coil secondary (plug cap to plug cap)

Random performance could be an air leak in your engines bottom end. The most common place is where pistons bolt down. I drove myself crazy chasing this problem in my 300. I rebuilt the carb, bought a different one to try, replaced all fuel lines, and had carb screws turned almost 4 turns out before I finally did a leak down test.

I would buy or put together a test kit but you might get away with just spraying down gasket points with wd40 and looking for bubbles.

Here is more info on air leaks. http://www.groupk.com/tec-airleak.htm

Try putting in the water and tying to something rigid and adjusting the carburetor with a load on it. Make sure it is warmed up first. Hope this helps.

Ok it's all good now, I had to take it to a local place on island(Okinawa Japan) apparently the stator was bad, the carb wasn't adjusted properly, and the waterbox was leaking. It was a little expensive, but they pretty much did a full tune up and ocean-proofed many of the electrical components, I took it out for my first ride yesterday, which leads me to a new post!
