John's budget SJ build

my head pipe bolts kept rattling loose too. the third and last time i looked closer and my threads looked pretty chitty so i drilled and tapped it for a 7/16-14 socket head cap screw.

I thought JB Weld bonds to just about anything.

I actually drilled and tapped the manifold for the 7/16 bolts first and then those started rattling out too so I was forced to helicoil those. Hope you have better luck sxi4evr.

I think the thread pitches are 14 or 18 and I used the one more readily available...Can't remember which but both are pretty freaking coarse.

Well curiosity has created a slight depression... I decided to weigh it this afternoon while I waited for my helicoils to put the pipe back on. Since I was weighing it, I got all the water out of the engine bay, pipe, and chamber. After subtracting 18 pounds for roughly 3 gallons of gas, I'm at a whopping 335lbs! WTF!! This ski isn't really even reinforced.

I know the foam got a bit waterlogged in my first few rides but unless my foam has been completely replaced by water, where did the extra 45lbs come from? I did try to get as much water out of the foam as possible long before weighing. My 750 only weighs 305lbs. So much for SJ's being so much lighter... :grumble:

Well the foam is super waterlogged and half gone so I'm sure it's only a matter of time before I punch through the tray on a landing. I've been thinking about it for months and I'd really like to give the flatdeck a try. I placed an order for 4 footstraps and another sheet of b stock. If everything comes in this week, I may rip into it on Sunday night but we'll see. I'm just hoping I can knock it all out during the week.

Well the flatdecking has begun. Ready to ride ski with all the water drained out that I could and minus a gallon of gas in the tank my SJ weighed 345 lbs...

The turfed gunwales filled primarily with dry 3lb foam and the floor weighed in at 15lbs. I stopped for dinner but I'm in the middle of defoaming now. Here's some quick pics of before and after cutting gunwales out. I did notice that I accidentally cut into the bulkhead.

Gotta admit though, that ski ran and handled phenomenally for weighing that much! I'd love to get this thing under 300lbs.

3 ski's in less than 6 months. Defoaming is getting kinda old...

So much for "under 300 lbs"... 90% done defoaming, gunwales removed, no floor or turf, gas subtracted, and it still weighs roughly 295lbs. That's pretty sad! Guess the aluminum pole, girdled head, and pipe weigh a lot since I know the total loss system is a lot lighter than stock and so is my waterbox.

i'm gonna hold you to the statement of having this thing ready to ride this upcoming weekend. i'm psyched to see how it turns out. i agree with mcdogger that you'll be backflipping (b4 end of summer.).

not sure if you did it or not, (i don't feel like searching the thread) but if you build your own hood liner it will knock off a bunch of weight as well and keep water out better.
