Is this what happens when you fry a starter?

Always just this close
Hello all,
I have my 87 js550 (and an SJ SN) but I want to get this 550 running again.

When I hit the start button, my starter makes a fast "whirring" sound but does not spin the flywheel.

do I just need a new starter or is there an easier fix??

Thanks all in advance

Sounds like a bendix is stuck.

When the starter spins, it engages the bendix. Centrifugal force kicks out the bendix to engage and spin the flywheel. If it's stuck, it will not engage.

The starter and bendix are 2 seperate parts altogether. That spinning noise, from my personal experience, is almost always the bendix not engaging.

Make sure the battery is good. A bad battery can engage the starter but not spin it hard enough to push out the part that engages. If you have a full battery, see above.
