Is This Impeller Cut Back?

I just took off my Solas Concord 13/16 to replace it with a Skat Swirl 13/18. I noticed the Solas is shorter than the Skat, does this mean it is cut back? The Solas weighs also 1.88 lb and the Skat is 2.45 lb. It kind of defeats the purpose of a lighter flywheel. The Solas is on the left.

look down inside the hub, where the treads are, theres a shoulder on the outside of the threads. this is where the stop is and where they would machine to "cut-back" the impellor. Removing material from there moves the end of the impellor back towards the stator blades.

Why must I build it??????

Nose length has nothing to do with cutback, you need to look in the hub on the back-side of the impeller.
I also noticed weight difference, but it is in the hub area so has little impact.

I think they may also cut some of the hub to clear....the one on the left looks like it may be cut back.....look how close the veins are to the end of the hub....

You're absolutely right about the Solas Concord being a lighter impeller and just the weight alone the helps the mid range acceleration, like a light weight flywheel.

If you could make the Skat-Trak Swirl impeller lighter by making the blades thinner, it would probably be the best prop.

I loved the very bottom end of my 13/18 Swirl but for the mid range punch of the 13/18 Concord is just awesome.

That Concord is defiantly cut back.

mod chamber limited chamber skat solas???? is there much difference? I think i'll get one of each and just swap back and forth as the trends change.

A 7 oz difference in weight is noticable to you on a machine weighing over 325lbs ??? I find that very hard to believe Mr Smart .

The Skat is the best prop .Shops sell Solas a lot because they can make a huge profit because they can buy them so cheap from Taiwan where they're made.

i hope your superjet doesn't weigh 325 lbs if so then you should use the solas....you need to loose every 7 ounces you can get:biggrin:

They weigh 291 lbs without fuel .so with 4 gallons at about 8lbs each that's another 32 lbs .323lbs

That's stock of course and aftermarket parts will usually shed some weight .
Even if it weighs 275lbs that's 4400 oz's and your shaving off 7 oz's
so that = 0.125 % weight savings
I've tried both and just like the Skat better .better made better performance

:haha: wowwie wow i think the weight savings was rotating mass like shaving off .6 lbs on a stock flywheel, I know the solas "slips" a bit before hooking up which could be caused by the lighter rotating mass??? i would rather try a different cone size or exit nozzle diameter or intake grate to help stuff water in and try to loose the "slip" just so the motor can rev fast. Both are good props IMO and to each their own:biggthumpup:

The lighter impeller with the less reciprocating mass is, the easier to move and rev.

If a crankshaft has two ounces of imbalance at 8000 rpm it's the equivalent of 225lbs of force.

that is why i went with the lighter solas, not to make my ski 7 ounces lighter but to let the engine rev "quicker" like the lightweight RAD i put on. I don't have any fancy technical data to post up to prove which prop is better but as long as you set it up to work as best it can, your good to go. Next winter everyone will say that the skat is good for 701's but with a stroker motor the power comes on a little later so the solas is better blablabla. or the other way around, who knows.
