FX-1 is this head right?

Hi guys,

i'm a bit confused by the head i took off my 61x egine.... to give you an idea of engine spec, its got factory pipe, 48mm ATP freestyle carb, carbon reeds & side exhaust (and the westcoast head). this motor was in need of a rebuild as it had scored pistons.

i've had the cylinders ported & re-bored to 82.5mm and now i'm confuse with the head.
its a westcoast (non girdled) head with changable domes and has 28cc domes fitted. this seems like it would hike the compression up well over the reccomended 180psi for regular fuel?
also, am i right in saying this head should use o-rings? if so mine was used with a head gasket..... i did think the domes look like they have been machined to accept a head gasket, they seem to have an extra ridge/cut in them on the cylinder side?
i think i am going to buy an ATP girdled head anyways, but is this head safe to use? could it be part of the reason it blew the head gasket & scored a piston?

any help would be great.

cheers

john

that head was designed to run a head gasket not orings. the 28cc domes with a head gasket should put you are 180 185 cc. you can run that head just check ur squish..

just to finish this off, i have indeed taken the above advice and will soon be ordering an ADA girdled head.

quick question, exactly how flat do the cylinders need to be for the head to seal ok and prevent the combustion from blowing the o-rings to bits?

the reason i ask is that my cylinders look spot on but the head gasket i removed has a slight leak into one of the cylinders. should i be ok to bolt it up and go? or is there a way of ensuring the cylinders are flat and everything will seal ok?

cheers

If the engine is in the ski its difficult to see if the cylinder is flat with a straight edge. Try cleaning it all off then put a straight edge on and see if you can get a thin sheet of paper under it at any point. Also make sure the sleeves haven't dropped.

head gaskets rock.. they never blow.

Nothing more than my opinion (which ain't worth much)- I would rather have a weak o-ring let go than a piston. The great part of o-ring heads is when a o-ring does loet go, you know it in 1 second flat and it takes all of 10 minutes to change.
