anyway... I'm thinking you should have sanded the gelcoat off. Gelcoat is kind of like paint. It's not going to flake off like paint but the glass wont stick ass good. You have to sand the crap out of it to get a good surface for the glass to adhere too. It's not about your glass, it's about the glass staying stuck to the hull.

The idea that you didn't take your turf off just suggests you were trying to cut corners. I don't even understand why you're keeping the turf. One sheet of hydro turf could cover the entire tray I think. You have to buy the turf, so just do the whole job. If you cut one corner, you probably cut another. That's just no good.

You can't change it, so just go forward, but next time spend more on the prep and don't look for the easy way out.

I had pictures of my install on the OTHER website a few years ago, I wish I knew if they were still there, you could see the difference in prep I think.

sand the ENTIRE tray, and wipe it all down with a solvent.

there should be NO glue left, nothing but clean/sanded boat there.

Water intrusion will get to you, but likely not via the footholds.
The bondline, the cooling and bilge hose, the driveshaft tube, the steering cable tube, all rideplate and intake grate inserts, and the exhaust tube flange usually leak like a seave.

If you didn't seal that with something (hardly anyone does), you'll have a waterlogged ski.
TO hell with it, go ride.

i wouldnt add anymore glass, thatll just be extra wieght. this will work. go turf it and ride.

just sand all the way to the fiberglass next time, so there is no gelcoat between glass layers

Don't worry about it. Have fun and IF something happens it's just a lesson learned. You may not have any problems with it at all. Don't take it as you messed up, take it as you could have done better. The point is that you could have done a better job, not that you did a bad job.

I wont send pics but I'll post them in the build up section when I get to that point. I would do the project now, but w/ school and etc I've had enough money in extra bills a few weeks ago to buy 3 more skis. I haven't done this project, but I have done repairs working with epoxy and glass. What i made was always very nice. My problems were always with what I made sticking to what was there.

I don't know how well it will work w/o turf in the foot holds, I have never used foot holds so i don't know anything about them, but if it's any help to you, hydro turf carries "B stock" sheets of turf.

That might be an inexpensive way to turf those new holds until winter. I haven't tried the B-stock but I'm sure it'll be good enough for 4 months. Edit: B-stock is $25 a sheet instead of $60.

ive used b-stock before, it is fine but only comes in one color. i would rather just wait and get a nice set of what color i want and spend the money. i would use b-stock on my rails though

I was going to be ordering some B-stock in the near future. It's nice to know it's good stuff. I don't think my turf is going to last long enough to wait for a repaint.

go for it, just make sure you have ALOT of weldwood and a heat gun. i just got two 16oz bottles from my friend at a car customization shop. thats abt what i used when i turffed my sx.. it was time consuming, but i did a really nice job with it.... whole lot cleaner than these footholds lol
