Is this a crazy idea....

So I have a SN completely stripped out getting ready for a mild build with reinforcements, slutty hood mod, foot holds, etc. I drilled two holes in the rear to see if the foam was soaked, and it's been dripping for days now. Looks like I'll add re-foaming to that list......but that got me thinking;

[crazy idea]
What if, in the middle of the tray sides, I cut them at a 45* angle and made the very back completely flat from the tray to the bond rail. Then take a 1" round stainless tube and bend it in an 'L' shape. Insert the short side in the new wide tray and the long side into the back of the 45* side. Turf and pad as needed on the tube and you'd have a nice wide tray, you could put your feet under the tubes for foot holds, and you'd have nice round holds in the back for grabbing.
[/crazy idea]

Here's a really crappy MS paint concept. Sorry to the pic owner, it was on the front page in the 'random pics' section.

Good idea !

2 things, you want to make sure you cant slip thru underneath from the inside of the tray to the outside with your foot the damage would be severe , and i would use AC for the poles..but just my opinion.

I dont think i would like the feel of a steel pipe hitting my shin or foot. there are people that have made complete flat decks and then install foot straps, looks cool. I did it to a 550 but never got the energy to finish the project

I don't really like footstraps, not as easy to slip your foot in and out of. The tube would be mounted at a height where your foot could not slip all the way through. It would also be padded and turfed.

I was thinking ouch, too. But maybe something a little more flexible would work, and be easier on your feet/knee/face. Maybe rope, or a hose? I like the overall look, and think you should try it.

Well if he's got the capability, he can weld flanges/plates on bent tubing. I kind of assumed he had those tools since he came up with the idea.

Ya, I do have the capabilities of welding aluminum or stainless with a couple flanges on either end and some nut plates glassed in to bolt the bars to. I guess that would be one point, if I didn't like them, I could just unbolt them and then add some straps/rope/hose?

As far as when, haha...Maybe as soon as tomorrow??? Depends if I can grow some large enough cojones to butcher a perfectly good ski. :biggrin:

Whenever/if-ever I do it, I'll post up the pics.

Kinda makes me think of some of the newer seadoo boats. From what i recall they have some pipes bending to flow with the body lines and it looks cool. Only thing im not sure about is safety. Maybe a honeycomb grill to keep you from slipping through the pipe??

Went under the knife today.....

What do you guys think about adding a pair footholds in the front sides? I'd have to remove or re-route the exhaust tube, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem.
