Is it possible to shorten a cable?

I want to shorten a throttle cable. I have an x2 with a cable from a 750 which ends up wrapping around in my engine compartment. Also there are a few strands that frayed on the end.

Is this possible? If it is, does anyone have a link to a how to page or where i get the parts i need.

you can do it but not easily,you can buy the cable ends that have the screw in them or you can buy cable ends that solder on also and you can get the ferrules that go on The the ends of the cables,the problem is most of those will be in packs of 10 but the cable ends are only like $2.50 TO $3.50 for ten and the ends are about $5.00 for ten.

what exactly am i looking for? I did a search and there are several differnt kinds of ends you can put on. What will fit onto my carb?

new cable costs liek 70 bucks. Also a standard X2 cable is too short for my aftermarket intake manifold and carb. I need a longer one from a differnt model but then they are too long.

i got a bracket from hot products that bolts to the 2 holes near the throat of a 44 mikuni.

X2 cable wont fit. thanks though. The bracket you are talking about would help except that would keep the cable as a pull up type and the carb is a pull down type. I would need to start changing the shafts and buying a braket and a new X2 cable.

I'd rather just mod the cable i have. Would be the simplest and cheapest way.

If the cable has the round barrel end piece on it (like Yamaha throtle cables) then you would have to go to a screw type but it is super easy to shorten a cable. Cut the end off of the cable (if it has one) with a dremmel tool and pull the cable out then pull the end piece off of the cable sheeth and cut the cable to desired length and then reinstall the end piece with some epoxy or JB weld just so that it doen't move. Slide the cable back through the sheeth and cut to desired length and use some JB weld on the end of it to keep it from fraying out.

I have cut tons of cables for home made projects in the past and if the cable end has a set screw holder then your good to go but if not then it will need to be changed to that type. I think older kawasaki choke cables had the set screw holders on them but I don't know for sure.

If you have access to a welder you can weld a barrel type end piece on the cable. It might take a few minutes of grinding to get it smooth and round but I have done it. Just keep adding metal untill it is about the right size and grind away.
