"What we have here is a failure to..." turn over with the every push of the Start button.
Boat: 93 Blaster, second owner on my third year of ownership.
Symptom:
1) Sometimes pushing "start" yields nothing (not even a sound) but then re-pushing it would get it to turn over.
2) Sometimes when pushing "start" there is a momentary hesitation and then the motor turns.
3) Most of the time pushing "start" the starter turns instantly.
4) On Sunday, after riding half a day w/no problems, pushing "start" did nothing for multiple attempts and ended its day.
5) Got it home and it turned over.
Particulars:
1) 2 years ago I developed a "starter turning over" problem with no turning over period no matter what. After inspection I found the previous owner had spliced in sections of wire that joined the starter relay and the S/S switch. The spliced wires were crushed and corroded and came apart in my hand. I replaced these wires with new sections and everything was acceptable. This is still a weak spot in the system as even the best attempts at shrink-wrap and silicone only last about 1 season but currently I don't think this is a contributing factor. Looking into an auto-motive connector with male/female pins to get rid of the shrink-wrap mess.
2) I have never taken the engine out of the boat (and don't want to...it has a Coffman...nuff said) so I cant tell the condition of the starter or the cable ends. By feel, the connections of the cables to battery feel tight. They also look good at the battery terminals too.
3) 2 years ago I opened the E-box and it was visually "clean".
4) Battery is fully charged and 2 years old.
5) Compression is mild.
Suggestions on where to start and what to look for?
Thanks.
