Intermittent Start - Once Mid-shaft Hand Turned

Hello fellow rabbit hole dwellers,

Background:

-4 Year old JSS Electrical System, 4 Year old OEM Start-Stop switch.
-ski had water in the front cover last winter, and E-Box was damp.
-I have had it running all summer with a moderate JM build.

Issue:

Nothing at all when I hit the start button....... unless I turn the mid-shaft 1/2 to a full turn, then it fires about 50% of the time. It fires super crisp, if it does. It has done this across 2 rides and 3 weeks now. I am guess the stator only works when the magnets are aligned a certain way?

you might have multiple issues, hard to say. #1 starter should always turn over when you hit the start button and have tether in (regardless of it actually firing)- unless 1 battery is dead/low, 2 switch is bad, 3 relay is bad, or 4 starter is bad (check in that order). does it always fire as long as the starter is turning over? not good that you had water in the front cover. lots of stators have been lost that way. lots of times issues with water entering through opening for starter - if water gets that high.

Turning the engine by hand should make NO difference. Stator / flywheel have nothing to do with the start circuit. Only thing I can think of would be the bendix is stuck, and by turning the engine it would disengage. BUT even if this is the case, technically the engine should still crank, click, clunk something if the bendix was stuck. In times that I have seen a stuck bendix, the engine still starts, and you can hear the bendix, and starter still turning while the engine is running.

I truly believe it was just coincidence that it started when you turned the coupler. I am betting you have a start switch issue, or start switch harness plug issue. Take every thing apart, and clean, clean, clean......

Thanks for the replies. It turns over like normal when I jump the solenoid, but I swapped it with one that was working and no click no start. I am going to replace the stator, starter o-ring, and clean all of the connections.

Follow the order Truly gave you. Start at your start/stop switch, take it apart and clean the terminals. Decent chance your issue is there.

I really need one for my sons SN SJ Build. let me know.

and yea that kind of damage to the wiring would make it not work right.
