Super Jet Insight for first time stand-up buyer/rider?

I'm a long-time couch rider and with the recent "Race Use Only" stamp on the new Superjets, I've decided to finally buy a stand-up (2010/2011 SJ) before new ones stop showing up at all. I know that some will suggest buying a used one, but I am not willing to take on someone's project at this point. Also, is there reason NOT to get the SJ over a SXR800? The obvious cons on the Kawi are extra weight and pre-mix. I'd like some insight on what to expect with this new toy, or if it is even viable for me to ride one as I am 6'4" and 200lbs. One of my skis is a GP1300R and while far from a stand-up, I often pretend that it is and can hop/sub/spin/etc it pretty good. As far as other riding experience that requires body control, I ride a 450 quad and a 1000cc bike.

I'll probably be too big of a puss to go into the surf with it in the beginning, but what, if anything, needs to be done to make it good for flat water shenanigans. Does it have enough power stock to attempt any sort of aerial tricks?

Thanks for any and all input from the veterans on this site.

Superjet is also pre-mix. The 08+ models have a slightly different bottom and it handles better (or so I am told). They also have a shorter pole and a slightly different steering setup. Superjet is the best all around ski IMO. I own an SXR and SJ.

I am about the same height/weight as you (6'5" 205/10). I love riding my SJ and can do everything smaller similar skilled folk can do.

Sometimes I do feel like my SXR "fits" me better being slightly longer and wider. It also carves much better than my SJ. My SJ feels like a BMX bike and the SXR is like a mountain bike. Both fun to ride, but very different in capabilities.

Alot of guys will tell you to buy used. But if you got the cash it will be nice to own a new problem free ski. For the surf you will want to install an electric bilge. This will help keep the water out of your engine compartment. Also you will want to make sure you take the proper post ride car with flushing and rinsing it off. Eventually you will want footholds, a little difficult to install but well worth it. Stock power is really nice, but eventually you will want a Factory B-Pipe, increased head compression, and a MSD ignition/EPIC. This will make the ultimate/reliable ski, without altering too much.

If I had to own one it would be a SJ, but I really like my SXR. Its a close call and both skis are very different/fun. Also the SXR is more popular for racers and some people are know for dropping 1100 triple motors in them. Good luck with the search, you will be happy either way.

How about my height?

I could have sworn that the SJ has oil injection. Maybe it was the pre-08 model that I'm thinking of?

My permanent is in Orlando area, but I go to school in Miami.

Thanks.

Ice - That's great info, thanks. A pipe/WB would be the first thing I mod - I love the brap, brap, braaaap and it would make it less likely that I get run over on the water

Post-ride is not problem. I've been riding ocean for quite a while. It helps that I have a fresh water ramp on my way home, so I usually back the trailer in and run some fresh water through them, then just rinse them with my foamgun

I won't be trying to go too fast on a stand-up - thats what the GPR and FZS are for :)

If you have the $$$ buy a new one, go ahead. When I first started riding like most we a little younger and maybe didnt have the funds so i picked up a 650 and moved up every year or two to another ski. If you are capable now of buying a brand new ski maybe with the experience you already have spending a few $$$'s more and getting something that is built for the next step already. I understand the idea of not wanting to get into somebodies elses mess.

Here is the thing I have learned while being a member on the X. These guys are not Fing around top notch products with the most amazing support available ANYWHERE ANYTIME.

Take a look around at some of the skis that may be availabel right now or coming up. This place is great and the knowledge is unmatched.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look around. However, it seems that most high-end build will require quite a bit more moolah than a new 2010/11 SJ which I can probably get for 6.5-7k OTD

Ya, then get the SJ. The ski is really good in stock form... you will just be wanting more after awhile.

For even a little bit less than a brand new ski from a dealer you can pick up a sj with a pipe ride plate intake and some of the sweet goodies that you will want immediately especially if you stay logged in on here.

Just my couple of pennies but best tip "BE PATIENT LOOK AROUND BUT BE READY TO ACT WHEN THAT SKI CALLS OUT TO YOU".

Just ran into the "Carnage" section. What are you guys doing for helmets? I never needed one for the couch, but have seen people bust on the bars in the big surf.
