Background -

I've been running a Jetworks valve right before the stinger on my SJ. Last year at the Rager my waterbox actually broke apart at the seam. I figured I landed pretty hard and it was something like a freak of nature.

Fast Forward to last week -

I didn't ride since the Rager so I installed a new waterbox over the winter. First ride out was a week ago or so. The first 10 minutes the ski ran great. It ran just as I remembered it did last year. From then on the ski rans like a$$. I bring the ski in and pop the hood. Smoke is coming out from under the hood, but no exhaust pieces were broken or cracked. I start splashing some water on things to see what is so hot, and sure enough, the waterbox is boiling.

Conclusion -

My buddy and I look into things and we find that the Jetworks valve is literally glued shut because of the oil buildup from the exhaust going through it. Thinking back to my waterbox issue at the Rager, I'm suspecting this is what actually caused the box to overheat and crack in the first place.

The Cure -

Clean your Jetworks valve as part of regular maintenance. I suppose you could set an interval of maybe 10 hours and see how it looks and adjust if need be.

Hope this helps!

How did you get exhaust in your cooling line to clog the valve? Or did I not follow what you are saying?

The downstream side connects to the stinger fitting, so when running it out of the water it will get exhaust in it.

Honestly, my Jetworks valve has never had a bit of anything in it, it's always perfectly clean so I'm wondering if there was another issue, like low water pressure which led to this happening which caused something else.

The valve is like 2 inches from the stinger. I never checked the valve when I bought the ski (a month before the Rager) so I have no idea on the history.

I rerouted my water lines so that the T portion of the line goes to the pisser and the straight leg goes to the valve. It was reversed prior to me finding the valve gummed up. I've seen T routed both ways so I suppose you just need to make it work with whatever way you route it. I may need to put an adjustable valve or restrictor in the pisser line to make be sure the valve is opening correctly.

Whenever possible, check with Art @ Jetworks for his recommendations on water line routing w/a FC valve. He's done a LOT of testing and has very definite ideas on what works best. He's also VERY good at explaining WHY he likes to run things a certain way so that you understand what you're doing. I do see a bit of carbon in the section of tubing between the FC valve and the stinger fitting, but I've never had any issues with mine. My boat sounds noticeably different when the valve is open. I've had it adjusted too tight when experimenting and the boat is a good bit louder if the valve is not opening until later. Give him a call. Good luck!

Sorry to threadjack, but I after reading this, I would like to ask a question or two about a FC valve.

I have been thinking about installing a jet works FC valve... I am currently running a mikuni main jet just before the stinger in the cooling line.

1. do you think that carbon build up can occur using a mikuni main jet, or no because there is a constant flow through there?

2. would pulling the mikuni main jet out and using a FC valve be better? after reading this thread, I tend to think the FC valve would be better in that it totally closes off water at idle...

thoughts... and thanks...

Most of the time the FC valve is used in conjunction WITH a restriction at the stinger. Even when the valve opens you don't need a lot of water. It also helps build pressure in the system. Check with Art.

I would also check the head pipe screws and make sure all lines are free and clear of sand... I had some extra sand and rocks in my cooling system after the rager as well. I would double check all those and backflush everything too. I dont know though ?

I run a riva red pipe so the screws aren't an issue for me. Backflushing is a good idea to make sure everything is clear.

This problem def. puzzles me?

yeah, I pull mine screws out every so often and use a small wire, the diameter of the injection hole, to make sure everything is clear and nothing clogged in there.

i ride salt water and i run a jetworks FC and it i never get any kind of build up.

Interesting. I'm curious as to why mine built up like that? I think I'm going to try and restrict the pisser and make sure jetworks valve is opening. That way there shouldn't be any chance for the valve to get gummed up with exhaust.
