impeller a tad tight (video)

I want to install a Solas Supra KA6 impeller on a 650sx. Impros said it would be appropriate for this motor (fresh rebuild, factory pipe, 44mm carb).

But when I put it in the pump, it won't turn. If I loosen it a little, it will barely turn.

When I put the stock impeller back in, it turns fine.

To me that would indicate that its a problem with the impeller, but the friend I bought it from is trustyworthy and said he only ran it a couple months before parting out his 650sx and switching to a superjet, and never had a problem with the impeller. It looks perfect.

Any ideas...?

my guess is your pump liner may have swollen over time.

while this was happening, the stock prop was wearing down against the liner.

now that you put a fresh prop in it is rubbing on the liner where it is swollen.


you could just run it as is and let it find its home, or send your pump out to have a new liner pressed in(the right way to do it)

i think there is a guy in jersey that does this service on the boards.

Sorry dude, your pump liner has corrosion induced high spots in it (it's shot out). Your new impeller is less worn than your other one, that's why it rubs more. Time for another pump or ("bandaid") grind down those high spots and run it until the rubbing starts again...Meanwhile keep a lookout for a better pump.

I have been looking for a replacement pump, but they all appear to be in worse shape than mine at a glance (chipped badly), so who's to say they won't also be swollen when they show up.

What about the local machine shop that bores my cylinders.... maybe they could "bore out" my pump . . . .

Try running a hone through it. That one doesn't look that bad. I've fixed worse with a hone. If you know some one with a mill you can have them bore it just to take the high spots down and it will work just fine. Kawis suck because you can't buy a plastic wear ring for them or just replace the housing like Yamahas & seadoos.

no don't do that- it will make it sloppy and ruin a good prop. I told you I can get em. I think its about 250-350. thats new bearings and seals ready for prop. used would be much cheaper if you can be sure you are getting a good one.

Yeah I know... I left my sneakers under your mom's bed... had to run out quick one day.

I found a local machine shop who said he'd bore my pump out on the milling machine to somewhere between 8 & 15 thou clearance for $30. That's as close as he can get with his gear. Fine with me for an old beater ski like this one.
