Ideas for jet ski security while on trailer?

I've been looking at a lot of products online and I'm curious as to which ones you all have found to work best for securing your skis. I'm going to be taking a road trip in May and our group will be staying at a few hotels while the standups are left on the trailers in the parking lot at night. Someone stealing one is almost enough to make me wanna bring it into the hotel room with me. Looking for some good ideas...

I always use the wire ropes with a nice master lock on front and back. If they want them bad enough they're going to get them anyway..... Actually come to think of it my buddy had some type of lock that went up thru the intake grate and locked around the drive shaft then down to the trailer..... Kind of like the CLUB for a jet ski...........

Yeah I actually was thinking about putting a massive hoss chain around the driveshaft and trailer. Maybe a couple chains. I don't believe there are any gated areas to the hotels, unless Holiday Inns have changed in the past year.

Get a piece of 7/16" threaded rod and bend one end of it into a J so you can hook it around the drive shaft. Then get some 1.5" channel or boxed tubing. Drill 1/2" hole in center of tubing, insert threaded rod, run a poly-nut through it.

You could drill a small hole on the outside of the threaded rod and put a pad-lock on it so you can't back out the nut for added security.

All you really need to do is slow them down enough not to bother. If someone really wants it...not much you can do.

I once used a portable self contained alarm (with keypad) and with its motion sensor, it would go off if anyone messed with it. I sold these many years ago and a friend of mine used it on his dock for several years...it worked well enough that it scared the thief away (got as fas as removing the pwc cover).

BTW: I still have a couple of these alarms and can post a picture if you want.

I just use a club lock cable and pad lock, plus make sure the hitch is locked and the reciever is locked to the truck. They can always unbolt the bottom of the ball if they wanted to unless you have one of those locking hitch balls. The lock that goes through the drive shaft is probably the best, but I figure they can see the red jacketed cable locked around the cover of my ski and around the trailer and leave it alone. Like everyone is saying, if they want it bad enough, they will get it!

use a motion alarm. Just stick it in the tray facing the front of the ski. no one is going to expect that. As soon as it gets tipped its going to go off and wake every one in the hotel up. I was going to do that one my way back from MI with my ski but I decided to just make it all in one trip.

A motion alarm sounds cool, but do the driveshaft thing and then throw an ugly brown tarp over it and bungee it down. It prevents people from committing oppurtunity crimes when they see the blinged out paint job you might have, they are less likely to look under the tarp to see what it is, so if they dont know its there they wont want to steal it.

I like the cable around the driveshaft idea. Or I just hire this guy to tag along...

I either wrap a chain around the ski and trailer or just a cable through the driveshaft. There are always skis that aren't locked to anything... those are the ones more likely to get stolen.

I have a lock that is made for locking the ski by the drive shaft to the trailer. It works like the thing described above with the treaded pipe and padlock. I also put a cable lock in the boweye, hitch lock, receiver lock and I have a self contained car alarm that I rigged up so you just have to hook the ground and + to the battery. It has a proximity sensor and shock sensor that sets off an alarm. I took it a step further and modified the alarm so it isn't the normal tone that people ignore I changed the alarm horn out for one of the construction vehicle "beep beep beep" alarms...everyone always looks when you hear that (125dB) especially at 2:00 AM.

After you get the ski secured to the trailer cable lock your trailer to another trailer in your group.
I also used different locks going from the trailer to the loops where the safety chains hook on the truck, just in case they try to remove the nut off the ball.
Pick up an old tarp from the hardware store and use some bungies to cover everything. Make it look like "nothing special" and not worth stealing.
Use multiple cables and locks going all over the place to make it look to much like a pain in the butt to bother with.

i just use cables and a master lock... its worked so far, knock on wood. The old tarp trick is a good idea also. just get it big enough

I usually run a chain or cable up through the grate around the driveshaft and secure it to the trailer axle.
Or, you can always stay in a good hotel in a nice neighborhood.

get a wavejammer, cut off the bottom and bungee the top over your SJ!!!!

this guy is a junkin genius! :woot: :woot: :woot: :arms: :Banane01:

no one is going to mess with a wave jammer especially one that is bungied together. slap some duct tape on for good measure.
