Hydro-Turf - Kit or cut?

Ok so i took off all the old crap off my ski and I'm waiting for the footholds to come in and im ready to order the turf but im wonder what i should do buy a kit or cut my own? im putting turf on every thing; the dash will be covered, the bumpers, the well rails are gone and will be covered in turf as well. also how much turf should i get? and if in one has any good install pics of what they did, that would help alot also.

One other question. when turfing the bumpers should i tuck the turf all the way under or stop it at the edge? were you can see the seam of the upper and lower hulls?

just buy the turf and pad. when you do the rails stop and dont go overt the bond line. I'm shure someone has pics and dont forget to sand the turf in the bottom edge a little

i do have foot holds (or at least on the way) and i'm kind of planing on using this as a learning thing. what ever i put on this year is coming off next winter so i can paint the boat. and do some other mods to the hull.

Ummmm. what do you mean sand the turf....? you mean like radius the exposed edge?

Also how much should i get?

I dont have a paint program on here, but once if you turf the rails and have it flush on the bottom of the rail just sand a slight angle onto it. I belive it will make it not peel up so bad. after some use

i found it easier to buy a sheet and cut it myself for footholds. i had enough left over from one sheet when i was done for another tray piece. i didn't do the rails though. if you get a kit make sure it doesn't have the pop out hydro turf logo on the sides. that makes it real hard to install with footholds.

don't do precut its such a waste of money. buy it by the sheet. check out the tech faq I wrote a how-to on turfing with out seems. it turns out super clean that way. it looks way better than even a precut kit. you can see how I did it in my buid in my sig too.

I just ordered a precut kit this morning - I went back and forth on whether to get the kit or the sheets. The kit was $120 vs. $60 for a sheet. But the kit includes padding and has cut outs for the tray, footholds, rails, dash and even the side rails. It's my first standup turfing job, so I preferred the kit. I am sure I could have done it with the sheets as well, but this just seemed easier.

I bought a mat kit as well and will start installing it tomorrow. I will find out then if it was worth it. It appears there is going to be sone trimming and cutting anyway.

I followed this and it worked out great. I ordered colored matting and they sent me it with the sticky backing by accident. This turned out to work great. I did a test piece to see if it would adhire(sp?) to the contact cement and it did. It made it really easy not having to put glue on the matting and worry about getting it all over my other turf when I was putting the bottom mat down.

On the hydro turf website for pre-cut it says in cut grove or molded. Which one is better more padding and easier on the feet? This will be my first time so if one is easier this will also help. Does pre-cut come with all the stuff needed to turf the ski, or do you have to buy glue, padding or anything else. I also heard that if you mention this site you get a discount is this true? Sorry my first time

Neither of them are 'more padded', you need to buy the underpad if you want comfort. I just get the B-Stock mat because it's cheapest and it is good enough quality for me.

You can mention this site and get a discount. But you can't get a discount on B-stock.

To glue the mat to the ski you need to get some DAP Weldwood (Red Can) from Lowes, Home Depot, etc... For more info on how to install the turf correctly, check the Tech FAQ like OneSoJourner said. There are tons of threads on this subject already on the forum.

I am not sure if there is a difference in padding of the cut grove vs. mold - I would think its all the same thickness pretty much.

Pre-cut comes with padding but not glue. Go to Home Depot or Lowes and get Dap Weldwood Contact Cement. Make sure to get the GEL! Red can. $6.96 for a quart (just bought it this morning myself).

If you mention PWCToday you get a small discount - I am sure its the same with this site. Personally, I'd order it through Abe at NorthGraphics (northgraphics.com). He gave me a nice discount yesterday and he has a deal running now where you get free 22" stickers with an HT purchase.
