How to tell the difference between a 550 Reed motor and 550 js?

I know that 1991 and up is Reed motors. But I want to make sure that the motor in the hull was not swapped for a piston port.

Im going to look at a 1992 550 sx yet the something looks off about the motor. Looks more like a js or 440.

the intake mounts to the cyl on both 550 motors. the 91-95 reed motor will be the same color as that 440 in your pic unless its been painted. all piston port motors are black. where the intake manifold bolts on, you can see the reed cages sandwiched in between the manifold . it will look totally different than that 440 in your pic. it will also have a keihin carb instead of a mikuni unless somebody changed the intake and carb.

The dude selling the ski was claiming the one in the picture was a 550 Reed. I swore that it looked like a 440 so I was just checking. Thanks for the info guys

That’s a 440 motor out of a ‘91 440. Not a reed 550

Running a 440 pipe too, if it was a original 92 550 is would be running the "Breadbox" pipe

One has reeds in it and the other doesn’t that’s how you tell the difference lol

this is a reed cylinder. the piston port will be flat on the intake side.
