How to clean carb

Hey guys,

I have a '95 square that is bogging under load, I have replaced the plugs and inline fuel filter, but that did not solve the problem. So I think im going to clean my carb as it might be a clogged filter in there.

But, i have never messed with carbs, and was wondering what the procedure is for cleaning them. (i have never even taken one off :banghead:)

Is it an easy procedure? Or am i better off taking it to a mechanic (really dont want to)?

Thanks in advance,

-Geoff

It really isn't that hard. You want to...

1. Remove carb (two 12mm bolts)

2. Remove fuel pump screws (4) and be careful not to rip gaskets, etc unless doing a rebuild. - just take your time and lay parts on a clean surface as they come off. Under the fuel pump cover there are diaphragms and you will see the internal fuel filter - inspect that.

3. Remove cover on opposite side (4 screws) - under that is the needle/seat - remove the two phillips screws which hold the arm and seat, and remove the spring also.

4. Remove 2 phillips screws which hold the jet cover, under that you will see the HS jet and the LS jet. Remove both of these with a flathead.

5. Now that the carb is stripped, clean all passages with the carb cleaner of your choice, and inspect all the parts you removed for wear. Then you can replace components as necessary, and re-assemble. There are diagrams available in the Mikuni manual/guide.

Good luck! -Kurt
