a lot of people bad mouth these skis but that is only because they have never been on one that was running right.
i am 6'2 260 and i ride a 440.
your problem is most likely in the pump. if the pump sleeve or prop is chewed it will run just like your saying. also the older 440's pre 82' did not have a ss sleeve in the pump and they get really ate up. 440 have this problem because the prop shaft is supported by a bushing. when it gets warn the prop starts digging in to the pump and even a small gap there will cause problems.
a good thing to keep in mind here is that a leaf in the pump can keep a ski from planning so even a small pump issue can cause you big speed loss.
also the older 440's will not run right if the plug gap is too big. the ngks are sometimes gaped to .36 when you get them and if you put them in with out gapping them you will have problems. i beleve the the gap range is .28 to .32 and on these sometimes less is more.
