How many ??

Spent a bit of the weekend working on the SN and the RN. Here is my list of How manys:

How many times can you knock the woodruff key out of the keyway when trying to put a flywheel back on?

RN= 8 times, SN = 5 times

How many bolts can you snap off? And how many different penetrating oils can you use to help loosen them up to remove them?

2 bolts (one rideplate bolt and one flywheel cover bolt). 3 penetrating oils : WD40, Kroil, and Liquid Wrench...the winner...good old Liquid Wrench.

How many crazy hull imperfections can you find on a SN?

2...so far... one soft spot under the gas tank and my tray has a hump like a dromedary camel.

How many screwdrivers can you ruin trying to remove the rear plate of a Mikuni 44 to change the needle and seat and main jet?

2 phillips, and one flathead, busted the corners right off.

How many times did I need to bust out the dremel with a cutting wheel?

Too many times to count. Besides vice grips the dremel is king of the backyard hacker's tools :bananajump:

How many beers?

Not nearly enough.

Those are my 'how manys', got any?

hint on the woodruff keys, put the slot at TDC. Then make a mark on the rear of the hub of the fly wheel so you can align it up when installing, or eyeball the slot from the front.........

are these salt water boats??

How many times can you ask the wife with skinny arms to try to find and drag out the bolt, nut, screw, etc from the bottom of the hull?

Countless times. I'm so sick of fiberglass imbedded in my forearms from forcing my arm down in the hull to get my fingers under the bedplate.

In hind sight that is a great idea, but on the RN I was pretty much stuck with where it was due to a 'nylon rope hopelessly jammed in the front cylinder' issue.

I ride them 99.9% of the time fresh water. As far as the history goes, the RN saw some salt, although doesn't really show it, the SN based on what I have been finding could have sat at the bottom of the Atlantic for a week :crying:

Why do you ask?(because of all the stuck fasteners I am guessing)

I also put the key on top with a little anti seize to hold it in position and mark the flywheel, never had to put rope in the cylinder I use an impact to take the bolt out and to put it in. I torque it to three little brap brap braps of the impact.

On my tool wish list. Are the electrics as good as the air ones? I used some heavy marine grease to hold the key in place, I just had issues lining it up. And the first time I tried it, I didn't take into account how strong the magnets were, nor how slippery the flywheel was.

I use the impact driver to take the flywheel bolt AND flywheel off .
Drill a small indent in the flywheel bolt and put your puller on the flywheel and than I use the impact to Brap the flywheel off .Works great .Loosen the flywheel bolt first of course .

SXI ,make sure you use loctite generously on all your bolts and you won't have to worry about them falling out or getting stuck in and breaking . It works two ways , it locks the threads AND seals them from salt intrusion .I haven't had a bolt break off in a long time and I ride about 99% in salt .

I agree that the dremel is 1 tool I have used a ton in modifying my boats through the years ,I couldn't have done some stuff without it .

I got to use a Dewault 18v Electric impact yesterday and loved it. It was so much easier than having the air line get in the way. But I personally just feel its a luxury, not a necessity if you already have an air impact.

Loctite was well represented this weekend. I used it so many times I could taste it when I was done. I don't know how old you guys are, but anyone remember the liquid polio vaccine you got as a kid in school? If not, blue Loctite tastes EXACTLY like it.

Actually they were these Husky screwdrivers from Home Depot that I got for Xmas. Guaranteed for life...my ass. When the flat head busted, it could have taken an eye out.

The one I ended up using that worked out probably DID come from a dollar store or a 'tool liquidator'.
