How do you shim a Super Jet engine?

I just replaced a 650 in a 1994 SN SJ with a 701 61X.

On the 650 there were those four "C" - shaped shims on top of the bracket which the engine bolts to. In other words, the shims were under the lock washer which is under the hex head engine bolt.

There were no shims between the engine bracket and the motor mounts.

Is there any "shimming" going on in such an arrangement?

In other words, don't the shims have to be between the engine bracket and the motor mount to have any shimming effect whatsoever?

Or is there some shimming going on with the shims placed on top of the engine bracket that I am missing?

Obviously, I don't understand engine shimming.

So, does anybody have a link to a thread or to a youtube video that you recommend that can teach me how to align i.e., shim the engine?
