Id say you ans your own question.... i dont know if there is really a way to test them... I hear you can soak them in some kind of fluid... maybe it was ATF over the winter to help them out....

well, chunks of metal took out my bendix
I was told to check the bendix, it looks fine
but the crank seal is toast:

yup the bendix had those little peices and for some stupid reason they break or fall out and the bendix will still work. there clips or something.

The part of the bendix that usually fails first is the thin metal bracket that keeps the three weights seperated evenly and held into place. It will work without them but you run a greater risk of one of the weights getting stuck in the out positon thus causing the bendix to be stuck engaged all the time. This will toast your starter and maybe cause the bendix to finish flying apart.

Yep I have tried it, it did not work out too well for my poor old starter. I noticed a definite loss of power before I figured out the problem.

but the bendix looks intact -
could those pieces have come from the crank seal?

well whatever,
some of the metal chunks were magnetic
so I doubt they all came from the crank seal
I have a brand new bendix from Randy
and a motor that needs major work:puppy_dog_eyes:

That bendix looks intact. In fact it's 100 x's better than the one I rock in my SN. I soak mine in used oil over the winter clean it up and grease it up for the spring. Good for the season. All those pieces look like oil seal to me. You'll have to play CSI and make sure everything is accounted for.
