hoodseal install

I know this is a no-brainer.....but when I stuck the new hoodseal on the hull it seems too large. after looking at others I see that it lays in there weird. so how do you tuck it down in and get it to stick? its like the seal is to large width wise. and what is that ultra hard black crap in there? man that is some tuff stuff to get out without scratching the hull. What is the best adhesive to use? just goop it in and set the hood on and let it dry?

I would think some 3m 5200 or some silicone would be best but I've never done it so I don't know for sure .

In order to get the best adhesion you should get all of the old stuff out of there. You can scrape and don't be afraid to scratch anything as it will be hidden by the new seal. After removing all of the old "goop" you need to scuf it up with 36 or 60 grit and then use contact cement or a good weatherstrip adhesive.

I just did mine. it was to long and cut it in the middle near the hood latch. I used slow curing CA glue from the local hoby shop. it's basicaly super glue. after gluing it down I clamped the hood down over night and it was ready to go.

Mine was also too big. I was so pissed when I had to cut a $100 piece of rubber to get it to fit

oh sorry 97 SJ. yeah, that is what is bothering me its a new stock yamaha seal. maybe once i get it wedged down in there it will fit just right but just figured it would be less hassle to ask for some advice before I go crazy on it. that 5200 takes forever to dry! last time I used it, it took three days to harden.

dont use 5200
superglue or contact cement........... I used weather strip adheasive, did not work too well.

I've been using 3m weather-stripping adhesive from Advance. Available in yellow or black. Sand/clean the lip and apply just like contact cement. Latch down the hood for good measure and wait 24hrs before getting it wet. Fix any loose spots with CA/superglue.

If you use contact cement and let both surfaces dry before attaching, it will only take a few minutes.

Afterwards, place the hood on the seal and use a strap around the hull and hood to press down on it (I think Steve (Watercraft Factory taught me this)).
Or, if you already have the latch (not a new hood) just place the hood on and lock it shut.

I have read many times that super glue is the best for the hood seal. I am going to need to buy a new one here soon. Don't mean to hijack, but what hood seal are we talking about Tom21? I am looking into getting the JSS one, but have seems like people are 50/50 on whether they like it or not. I'll probably end up ordering an OEM one.

the jss is a waist of money. I couldn't get my hands on a good cheap one like sluts so I bought OEM for $109 at legdrag.com

BTW, superglue, crazy glue, and Hobby store glue are all the same (CA). the only diference is the hobby glue you can buy in a bigger bottle and slower curing options.

Never had a problem with JSS it lasted 3 years but I do purchase my own from McMaster Carr now and use contact cement to glue it down. I get about three hood seals for 20 bucks from the McMaster material so thats about 9 years of seals for $20. IMO

its the stock seal from yamaha for a 97 SJ. My concern was just that it seems too wide to fit in the grooove and too large like I will start to install it and have a bulge of extra material when I get close to finishing the install. it always seems like too much rubber when you first put it in, then a year later there is a 1 inch gap right where the "extra" that got cut out should be. so I asked for others to chime in on there install experience as many have built skis and I'm sure that someone used the stock seal on a roundie. so basically use CA and just do it is what I think the vibe is. thanks will do.

My JSS lasted half a season and hood comes off to side. OEM seal is the way to go IMO and Lowes sells a huge bottle of 3M superglue. I will be puting an OEM on a freshly painted RN myself this week.

Sorry to bring back an old thread but I've got hoodseal issues. My oem hoodseal is in good condition, but it has come unglued on one end and seems too long now to be put back in the track.

1. Is this a common problem?

2. Does it mean I need a new hoodseal?

3. Should I cut it to get it to fit back in place or try to force it in and glue it without cutting it?

4. Superglue or contact cement?

:scared:I think silicone is good enough in that case .cut it to fit and use silicone .

Put the slicone on and put your hood on and latch it until dry .

New OEM hood seals are about $100 :scared:
